List: Best 30 Wii Games plus Ghost Squad (10 years from now)

Post by mjmjr25 »

Greetings,

Let's work together to compile a list of the Wii games you will want on your shelf 10 years from now.

This is different from the "rare/valuable wii games" thread, and different from the "best wii games w/o motion controls".

This list is:
- Which games in the Wii library will you hope to have on your shelf in 10 years
- Value / Rarity may play a small role in nomination; but shouldn't be the determining factor (ie, no "My Horse and Me". Even if its worth $200...you still aren't going to play it.)
- Most likely is console specific, but not mandatory
- Most likely isn't a sports / rhythm or other franchise unless there is something so good about that particular version it will still be the "go to" in 10 years (ie, "Just Dance 3" shouldn't make the list).

More examples: Super Mario Strikers Charged was a mess (imo) and was a downgrade from the GCN version - it wouldn't make this list. Mario Kart Wii was very good, but w/Mario Kart 8 being such an improvement, MK Wii wouldn't make my list either. (this is not to say they can't be on the list; this is to say if they are on my shelf in 10 years, I don't think i'd pick them up and play them over these other versions, so they don't meet my personal criteria for game selections).

I'm hoping to get a list of about 25 or so games that get a majority opinion of meeting this criteria - so there is no harm in +1-ing someone's selection and there is no harm in voicing (polite) dissent of someone's selections..

I'd say my top 15 that I associate strongly with the Wii and would want on the shelf are...

Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
The Last Story
Xenoblade Chronicles (depending on how future ports compare, this may get replaced)
Pandora's Tower
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Wario Land Shake It
Wii Sports/Resort
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Gunblade NY & LA Machine Guns
Ultimate Shooting Collection 2 (JPN)
Fortune Street
No More Heroes (ports lose the Wiimote waggle, which is key)

Any reason why you'd pick this and not House of the Dead 2&3 Return?

I enjoyed Gunblade/LA but I don't believe I would go back to it in ten years.

HOTD 3 is better on PS3, HOTD2 I assocIate w/DC. The LA/NY games aren't avail anywhere else.

Elebits (or Eledees depending on where you live). It stands out for me as the game that defined the Wii experience. It really presented a unique implementation of motion control that was just plain fun on all levels. I play it regularly, and it definitely sits in the top-tier of all Wii titles for me.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 simply because it improved upon the first, a feat in and of itself. While both games are great, I'd really only want one in my library 10 years from now. It's unlikely I'd be playing both. It'd be like playing Borderlands when Borderlands 2 improved upon the original in so many ways that the older game just isn't as fun any more.

Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure because it's awesome on every level and a bit of a non traditional puzzler. It, like Elebits, really tried to harness the Wii as a different console than the competition and knocked it right out of the park.

Murasama: The Demon Blade again, for being awesome on every level. It's like playing a beautiful painting. This did end up getting a bit of a remake down the line on the Vita, but it would still make my Wii library.

There are definitely more...Excite Truck would probably be another. Don't get me wrong, the motion controls on this game exacerbate how "off" the motion controls could be, and yet they don't impact the overall gameplay. This game is a ton of fun, and so cool to see Nintendo try something new...even if it was partnering with an outside studio. It's also cool because it's one of the few Wii games that allows you to put your own music on the SD card and use it in place of the game's music...which just enhances the awesomeness of the experience.

I'll think about it and come back to the thread. :)

I refuse to play it any other way and wish all of the RE games used the motion controls of the Wii.

Good lists so far. No Zelda mentions yet though? Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are both essential.

Data East Arcade Classics is another great one. I believe it's the only Data East compilation out there. Magical Drop III, Heavy Barrel, and Wizard Fire together in one package. Awesome.

Lost in Shadow is a great puzzle-platformer, a genre that's severely under-represented everywhere.

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor hasn't been mentioned yet? An excellent rail shooter and a worthy follow-up to the N64 original.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers gets a nod for being a great action-RPG adventure and really the best and most playable FF game on 7th gen home systems.

I'm also partial to Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. It managed to even outshine the original. Some may feel the PS3 HD release makes this one moot, but I prefer the Wii controls.

There's a part 2?

I'd say throw part 1 on my list. Three great shmups in one.
