Your top Genesis tunes
Re: Your top Genesis tunes
Already been mentioned, but Streets of Rage and the sequel have fantastic soundtracks. I'm personally partial to Moon Beach from SoR:

Unfortunately this is somehow missing some instruments, and I can't find a video that isn't, but it still gets the idea across.

Thank you for this. These are brilliant. It's frustrating trying to find audio rips on youtube as most have just been sampled from emulation as that's the easiest way but it's not always accurate. I'd love to get an arduino and have it run the genesis Yamaha 2612 chip.

Re: Your top Genesis tunes
Ah, this is the kind of thread that made me fall in love with Racketboy.
Puyo Puyo - Final of Puyo Puyo
This might be my favorite video game track on any console -- it's at least my favorite archetypical "video game-sounding" track. It exists on the Super Famicom as well, but it's plagued by that wonky midi synthesized "yappy dog blowing a pan-flute while someone gives you a wet-willy" sound that so many tracks had on the S-SMP when they ventured into the hard techno and industrial metal realms. Pokey Means Business obviously notwithstanding.
The Mega Drive version hits alla' these bizarre hard-steel harmonics and bombards the listener with dive-bombing electric powerslides that just scrape against the edges of the soundchip. It borders on the shrill while keeping the bass deep and pounding. It sounds like being sacrificed in a blood ritual to the computer overlords. And against all expectations, it's somehow in a puzzle game with chibi characters. Awesome.
Nine other favorites to make it a tentative Top 10 (I could go on and on and ON about these, but I already have a reputation about that, haha):
The Hybrid Front - Theme of Cocoon (Ground Forces) No. 2
Bare Knuckle 3 - Dub Slash
Thunder Force IV - Fighting Back
And an (off-the-list) agreement with Niode on Stand Up Against Myself.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Metropolis Zone
And an honorable mention to The Hives for their "cover" of this song, "Walk, Idiot, Walk".
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - Second CFFJR's Big Arms post.
Midnight Resistance - Home, Disappointment, and Counterattack
ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron - Funky Alien
Sonic Spinball - Lava Power House
Ristar the Shooting Star - Beyond Space
A completely different kind of track, but to me this is, like, this gut-wrenching, heart-melting affirmation that everything is pure and right and beautiful in the universe, all in 35 seconds.
As a bonus ('cause I know that these are totally cheating), the absolutely INCREDIBLE Sega Saturn Sega Ages remixes of Restoration and Land Master AXV-25 from Phantasy Star II and IV, respectively. The only time a video game music remix has left me slack-jawed and misty-eyed. Unfortunately, these versions are exceedingly hard to come by, since the tracks aren't easily rippable from the CD. In a way I feel bad posting these, since one of them cuts out before it's completely through, and I can't really tell you where to hear the full tracks outside of buying your own copy of the rather expensive collection. But still, these are just outstanding.

Doesn't get much better than Castlevania music for me. Even though Bloodlines music overall is one of the weaker Castlevania entries, stage 1 is pretty boss:
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Nice call. I love how well they mimic an organ with those old sound chips on the old Castlevania games.Stark wrote:Doesn't get much better than Castlevania music for me. Even though Bloodlines music overall is one of the weaker Castlevania entries, stage 1 is pretty boss:
Here's a track that's maybe not the best, it was just so fitting with the game

Sonic 2's "Metropolis Zone" is my favorite Genesis tune ever.

But someone already mentioned that, so here's a few more of my favorites:

A lot of EA games didn't have the best music but they were so distinctive, you knew right away when someone was playing one without even needing to see the big dopey cartridge with its mysterious yellow tab.Snatch1414 wrote:Nice call. Speaking of EA music, there's this "classic":
