This really makes me think... I wonder what the historical fluctuations have been for say comics, vintage toys, dolls, or something else that may be considered "retro collectibles". I'd be intrigued to see if these different histories, their audience, and their valuations would reveal something that us gamers could look at to get an insight what the future holds for video game collecting... I bet it would be very helpful and interesting to many of us in the hobby.

Correct, the SMS was the 3rd revision of the SG-1000, called the Mark III. In Japan the original SG-1000 and the Famicom were released on the same day in 1983. (talk about an early console war!)
Speaking of the SG-1000, it's tough to collect for a console when the console itself is so damn expensive. What's a SG-1000 worth these days? $250 or so?
This is why it took me so long to get into the Vectrex and MVS. Took forever just to save up for the systems, let alone the games.
SG-1000 mark II is easier to find, cheaper and plays SG-1000 games. Or buy a Mark III/JP Master system and play all the games. If you are really thrifty buying a jp Mega drive and master system converter is even cheaper.

I'm not so sure it would. I imagine things were fairly stable or at least had gentle changes until all the stupidity of collectible being stamped on everything, numbered editions, and insane hype drove everything mad in the early 90s.
I was PLANNING not to collect for the Saturn due to the cost of it - but once I looked at what I actually have, I realized I'm not far from completing it, so I'm gonna go for it.
Saturn and Dreamcast are the only systems I plan to collect for, just due to how much I love those systems. I'd also like to collect all the MVS games, but I feel like that rare crappers like Legend of Success Joe will prevent that from happening.
That's the biggest thing that prevents me from collecting for a system - when the rarest games are also the crappiest. It's why I gave up on NES collecting early on.
I really am interested in the PC-Engine and Wonderswan, but YIKES are those games pricey! - even the most common ones cost upwards of $20! 0_o Plus, I don't really have a drive to collect games anymore, so I can't justify these systems in the slightest.
I used to have fond memories of the Sega Saturn growing up and about a year and a half ago I began collecting for it. It has been expensive to say the least but it is very enjoyable. I never thought I would collect for it..
I wouldn't say I love the Sega CD but I can't say I would like to collect for it, even finding quality Saturn games was tough so I imagine Sega cd must be even harder!
I'm in the "carts only" camp. I spent some time building up a rather large dream cast collection but found that I didn't like playing it and for whatever reason don't think discs have the same charm. My favorite system to collect for has been my Neo Geo MVS and I plan to grab an AES as soon as I find a decent (relatively speaking) price for one.

Your crazy man CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY. Honestly I'd just stick with MVS, especially now. You're going to find out fast that most the games that are remotely affordable are pretty crappy, except maybe Nam1975 and Magicical Load, Just get a CMVS for that AES feel.
Like a lot of people in this thread already: Saturn, PC-Engine and Neo Geo would be consoles I think are awesome but I'd never get around to collecting.
