Best Wii/Wii U Games Without Motion Control

Post by chuckster »

Hey guys, I've been slow to the current-gen Nintendo party, partially because I've tried Wiis at friends' houses and didn't care for the motion control gimmick. Don't get me wrong, it's fun for Mario Party and Wii Sports, but I really prefer a gamepad for most games.

I'll mostly be getting the system for big first-party titles, (Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, etc.), but I was looking for some great titles that weren't so obvious, because I don't want a whole system dedicated to just a half-dozen heavy hitters.

So now that I'm ready to take the plunge and consider a Wii or Wii U, what games would you recommend for someone that doesn't care for motion controls, or just great titles that are worth trying out with them?

Off the top of my head, from my collection, not counting first party games: Sonic Colors, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Metal Slug Anthology, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, Ghost Squad(it's a light gun game so it uses the pointer, but there's no waggling)
Wii U: Scribblenauts Unlimited, Tekken Tag 2, Sonic Racing Stars Transforming Blahblahblah
Insert clever quote here.

Well, for Wii there is:

Xenoblade Chronicles
All the Neo-Geo compilations (KoF, SamSho, Metal Slug)
Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2&3
Track Mania
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

There are a few shmups that are decent like Castle of Shikigami lll, Ultimate Shooting Collection (Karas, Radirgy, and Chaos Field), and Ocean Commander.

I guess I'd say get over it or be open minded, first off. Zelda, Mario, and Donkey Kong all use at least some motion control, incidentally. Good games without motion? Xenoblade and The Last Story, as mentioned.

So almost nothing on Wii U relies on motion controls except the Wii Sports remake. A few games use it as an optional (often minor) feature, but if you never use it then you aren't really missing out. There are a decent number of good games on the platform too, depending on your taste of course: Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Pikmin 3, Monster Hunter, Bayonetta 1 & 2, Rayman Legends, Deux Ex Human Revolution, Zombi U, Wonderful 101, etc.

For Wii, motion controls were hammered in a bit too often so the list is smaller... there are still some good ones though: Xenoblade, La-Mulana*, Punch-Out!!**, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Monster Hunter (but get the Wii U version instead), Mario Kart**, Muramasa, A Boy and his Blob, The Last Story, Geometry Wars Galaxies**, Castlevania/Contra Rebirth*, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Klonoa, Resident Evil 4**, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, Shiren the Wanderer, Little King's Story, etc.

* Digital only game.
** Some argue better when using motion controls.

Realistically, you are writing off a lot of awesome games if you ignore motions controls though. Boom Blox, Dead Space Extraction, House of the Dead, Super Mario Galaxy, Trauma Center/Team games, Zelda, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Zack & Wiki, Sin & Punishment, Fluidity*, Bit.Trip Complete, No More Heroes, And Yet It Moves*, Dawn of Discovery, LostWinds*, Red Steel 2, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, etc. Some games you probably won't care about writing off... but when motion controls work well and are more than just pointless waggle, they aren't always that bad.

This game was mentioned a couple of times. Investigate the available control schemes before buying - I think you need to use a GameCube controller to avoid motion controls. So it counts, but most of the available control schemes do require some level of motion (which is weird and unfortunate).

Other NeoGeo collections are better and support the classic controller. If you can still find one of the Tatsunoko (or other) fightsticks at decent pricing then they are really fun too.

From my collection; the best games I've played on Wii and Wii U that don't use Motion Control are;

Wii:
Sonic Colors
Goldeneye 007 (Uses the pointer. IIRC, I think there's motion control on that as well. If there is, you can use the Classic Controller on it anyways.)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Rhythm Heaven Fever
NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
Pokemon: Battle Revolution (This one is only good, if you have Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum on the DS)
Tetris Party Deluxe
Super Mario All-Stars (A port of the SNES game; it's kinda pricey, though, so you may be better off getting the SNES game)
Kirby's Dream Collection (Also getting kinda pricey, but it comes with 5 games, and a challenges mode, so it's worth it for that alone)

Wii U:
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Sonic Lost World (This one is a love-it-or-hate-it deal. There's a demo on the eShop, if you're interested.)
DuckTales: Remastered
Rayman Legends (Some levels require the Wii U tablet screen, though, but no motion controls)

There's also a few games, like the Super Mario Galaxy series, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Donkey Kong Country Returns that use minimal motion control. If you don't mind doing SOME motion controls, they're very worth it.
This user really likes SEGA Saturn. Avoid at all costs.
