Which games have aged the best for younger people?

Post by ProxyCell »

I was sharing a retro game project with someone today and he and some others kinda dismissed older games as being mostly nostalgic and not worth playing. While I agree that there is a heavy nostalgia factor I am convinced there are some great games from ye olden days when we had to use land line phones and watch TV series' out of order.

I mostly think of puzzle, sports and trivia games as ones that have aged well and I am looking to the rackeyboy community which I respect the most amongst the retro gaming boards, what old games would you say have aged the best and could even be enjoyed by young people today?

Well for puzzles I'd say Nintendo's Picross series. Also the Brain Age games for the DS.

Sports not so much in the traditional sense (Madden) because the roster would be outdated in a year.

And triva could be good but sadly I know of none.

Oh man, platformers have aged phenomenally well. We are talking the Marios, the Megamans, the Ninja Gaidens, the Sonics. Tons of games in that genre still hold up as being great in terms of mechanics and controls in a way that is fun and entertaining.

That is saying a lot since I never grew up with Nintendo games. I was a Sonic fanatic through and through.

Want some other game choices? I would select a ton of classic PC games. Titles like Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, Duke Nukem 3D and Darklands as all great titles that have the old school charm, but still have the knack to capture the imagination.

Sure some old games stink and do not stand the test of time, but a good game is a good game. The rules have not changed much.

wow, i'm amazed at the dark sun one, that used to be my fave DnD setting but none of my friends ever had the books for it...

i was thinking more along the lines of console games, including handhelds but PC ones are fine too so long as a younger person today could be hassled by someone older into playing it and actually enjoying it

I could say about 80% of 2D games have aged completly well and are still great. Just play any 8bit or 16bit game and you'll see. Now when you say "aged" you mean by graphics then that's a matter of choice but 2D games still hold up great the 3D are the ones that look bad but could still play well, look at half life, quake, unreal tournament (these PC games got console ports and are available on steam and can be played on anything that has a screen)

If you want games were you say "i can't believe this is on X console" there's some articles that list many games on the site:

3rd and 4th generation games, in general. The graphics and gameplay were refined and nearly perfected.

1st and 2nd generation were the growing pains. 5th and a good bit of the early 6th generation were growing pains all over again because most companies had tossed all the 2D stuff out the window and went hog-wild into the Dire Straits music video school of 3D animation and the gameplay had to be reinvented as well.

There's a reason kids aren't out collecting Atari or Intellivision games. There's a reason people keep begging for Square to remake Lego Final Fantasy Final Fantasy VII.

Most games that were good on their day of release are every bit as good today. As I see it, anyone who characterizes older games as "not worth playing" won't change his mind because you show him Castlevania or Cosmic Encounter or Gradius because the issue are not the games themselves, but how the narrow mind way he's approaching them. You could show him the best game in the world and he would dimiss it just like people dimiss Citizen Kane because it's in black and white.

Still, if what you want is a list of good, accessible games, Racketboy has some nice guides and articles on the subject, you can check them on the "Guides" section on the top left corner of the website.

Well its usually ignorant people, with small imaginations. You know, people who would rather play CoD instead of Half-Life because "ew the graphics are terrible, this game sucks". No hatred towards CoD it's just a great example.
