Believe me, there is such a thing as white trash. I grew up in Alabama and was a census taker in rural Alabama at one point. Let me regale you with my magical journey to the lair of the white trash:

First things first, yes, this was in a trailer park. I encountered many extremely nice people in that same park, many very wonderful people, but not with this household. And from the outside, this trailer looked perfectly normal: clean, a well kept lawn, and a trampoline in the back, a couple of kids playing, etc. So I approached a gentleman in a camouflage ball cap who was working on a riding lawnmower out in the front lawn to begin asking my questions.

"I don't talk to the government. My wife does all the talking," is all he said in a sort of sullen, hollow voice. I asked where his wife was, and he just sort of nodded to the door of the trailer. He seemed nervous as hell, so I thanked him and left, not wanting to push the issue of my census questions.

I knocked on the door. Another child opened it. I identified myself as a census taker, and the child held a door open while a shrill, angry voice beckoned me inside.

The second thing I noticed was the large flag of the Confederacy spread across the wall. I've seen these many times in the South, sometimes out of racist anger, sometimes out of a(misbegotten or otherwise, your pick) sense of heritage. I believe here it was a combination of both. But the first thing, the absolute first thing I noticed was the smell. There were heaps of pig shit all over the room in piles, left to fester for God knows how long. Entering was like moving through a brick wall of stank, like it was punching you in the face. I kept my census papers close to my face and forced myself to take shallow breaths through my barely open mouth.

"What you government folks want?" I heard the shrill voice again, with an edge of anger this time. I lowered my census papers to see a sort of throne. A child sat on one side, a full grown pig on the other. Perched on an armrest was a Tupperware full of boiled peanuts, still soaking in the fluids in which they were cooked. A meaty paw manhandled them and forced them into a huge mouth on a woman who could give Jabba the Hutt a run for his money. "The Hell the government pestering me?" she shouted. "They don't wanna give me nothing cause I'm white! That 'racial slur' president don't wanna give us white folks a damn thing! Why you here?"

I explained that I was with the census and had nothing to do with President Obama and that she had failed to fill out the mailer that was sent out. She just nodded and shouted past lips soaked wet from the gobs of peanuts she was eating, "I threw it out. Why is Obama spying on me? He just wants my money to give to all those black 'racial slur.'"

Slowly and calmly, I did my best to explain the census and how it was for gathering demographics and assigning the number of representatives, and she seemed OK with that aspect. I also told her that she could refuse to answer any questions that bothered her. She seemed to respond well to this and agreed to answer a few questions.

It went well enough, I suppose, though more than once she would give me a suspicious look through her glossy, beady eyes. A couple of times she refused to answer my questions, and I did not push the issue. The pig got up and defecated at one point, sending a new wave of stench that stung my eyes, but she did not seem to noticed. She just ate her peanuts, while the child occasionally would lean up and steal one when she wasn't looking.

Finally, with my questions done, I thanked her and turned to leave. "And tell Obama to kiss my ass," were her parting words. "He's given all our welfare to those 'racial slur' and none to us good people. Us white folks gotta stick together!"

As I left, the man who was working on the lawnmower waved and smiled a pleasant sort of smile, and I realized it wasn't me he was terrified of, it was his wife. I watched the two children outside play together, talk to him(they were his kids), and then run over and begin playing with another boy next door who happened to be black. The man and his two kids were trashy, sure, but they were nice enough and talked openly and with great warmth to their black neighbors.

It was the thing in the trailer, however, that was white trash.

When i think of "white trash" i think of someone like joe dirt. Not a child/women beater, ray rice/adrian peterson.

@Ack, that story had Eminem's Days of Our Live song playing in my head. "It's almost dark and I'm still trying to nail a trailer park "explitive". I got a good gut laugh from your in depth analysis of white trash.

@Stickem, Joe Dirt was an awesome guy...in no way white trash.

@everyone, I hate tapatalk. #firstworldproblems.

Test Your Hearing Range
Well, turns out I can't hear anything above 17 kHz anymore. I remember taking one of these when I was like 16 and going into the 20's. That's what I get for not plugging my ears around jet engines I guess.

You on/around Yokota now (based on profile?). I lived there in the mid/late 90s.

Mine starts dipping in volume around 17 kHz but it doesn't cut out completely until 20k, which is compltely inaudible to me.

Might be just my headphones though. What you're using to play back your audio would definitely affect something like this.

I should ask my girlfriend to try it when she wakes up.
