That subreddit is absolutely rabid and out of control. Honestly, I just want:

The original 12 from Super Smash Brothers
Zelda Characters
Sonic
Villager

People go nuts because they spend all day obsessing, scouting, driving, calling, etc. honestly it's a popular product but I think a lot of it is a holiday hot item and will slow down. It's the Ty beanie baby of 2014?
They're cool so it's not detractor but that subreddit I have to take with a grain of salt. Hilarious though!

Probably the latter. I doubt many are being used, and I don't think Nintendo entirely intends them to be at this point. They want them to be impulse buys due to scarcity, bought because you don't know if you'll find them again, rather than a planned accessory that you specifically want to use.
Figure, by the time 3DS owners in the U.S. will even have an accessory or new system version that can even use them, several rounds of figures will have appeared and been insta-discontinued. You'd already have been out of luck for some of them if you got a Wii U for Christmas. For something that debuted in November.

Either Nintendo is going to release blank chips that can be programmed as any character that you want to build up, or the system will implode when people can't actually get the figures they want to use when it comes time to actually use them. Or they'll reprint them after all.

Pit (along with Ultra Street Fighter IV) arrived in the mail yesterday. Now there's only one more amiibo left to get that I had my heart set on since they were announced....

Unfortunately, that's Captain Falcon, so I'm probably SOL. Nutter buggers.

I have all of wave 1 and 2 but I thought I was going to be out of luck there for a bit with Pit when Best Buy cancelled my pre-order. Then I ended up with two Pits. I'll probably sell one to off set some of the cost of the others or save it as trade bait if I miss a wave three figure. I have all of wave 3 pre-ordered, with the exception of Rosalina, but all of the non-exclusives I pre-ordered in store at TRU with the cards. I'm not sure I feel too good about that really.

I'm a little surprised by how well these are doing. I knew there would be people who wanted to collect the entire run but I figured it would be a relatively small number of people. I think it was back at last E3 Sakurai said something about it be extremely hard for someone to collect the entire set. I think that is at least part of the reason some figures are so limited and also why I don't think any of the discontinued figures will end up getting reprints.

I hope future games will have their own Amiibo sets rather than just reusing the Smash ones for unlockables. We know the new Kirby will use the Smash figures but I am hoping Captain Toad and Mario Party will get their own sets. If they keep using the Smash Amiibo all they can offer are unlockables since they only read/write with Smash.

Price Charting now has the Amiibo line listed. I don't think the loose prices are correct.

I got a Mario one today (as it looks like most stores have Mario or Pikachu), just so I could see if I think on a gameplay level it is worth having one.

My friend has Link so I can use that for the unlock in Hyrule Warriors.

bloomberg wrote:Nintendo Heads for Best Holiday in Years as Profit Seen Tripling
The Japanese game maker that lost 23.2 billion yen ($193 million) last year is on a surprising comeback with hit game titles like Super Smash Bros. and a new line of interactive figurines called Amiibo. At least eight analysts raised profit estimates or ratings since September, with the two most recent calling for profit to triple to 36.8 billion yen.

Such results would mark a vindication of sorts for President Satoru Iwata, who stuck with a strategy of selling his games only on Nintendo devices rather than offering them on smartphones and tablet computers. With Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 gaining popularity, the Kyoto-based company projects it will sell 3.6 million Wii U consoles this year and take in $1 billion from Amiibo sales in the U.S. alone.

===============================================================

How long 'till Nintendo starts to release every Pokemon in Amiibo form? It's basically money on the table now that Amiibo has become so popular. Pokemon fanatics would force themselves to buy the whole lot of 'em. You know a whole generation has repeated the "gotta catch 'em all" mantra ad nauseam since childhood.

Even if Nintendo just released the first 151 Pokemon Amiibos, that's

Code: Select all

151 X $12.99 = $1961.49
from every self-styled Pokemon master in the U.S. and Japan.

If Nintendo releases all pokemon in amiibo form... (Hold on, let me google that... Bulbapedia says there is now 719 pokemon)... That's

Code: Select all

719 X $12.99 = $9339.81
from the richest, craziest pokemon lovers who are willing to drop ten grand on pokemon.

All that money!

Finally nice to see Nintendo gather some momentum and steam. $1B from Amiibo alone is a nice projection, as long as they can keep the demand and supply at a nice balance.

I tweeted earlier that I'd gotten lucky with finding Marth, Wii Fit Trainer and Villager, but that I'd had no luck at all with Captain Falcon or Little Mac.

Some random dude tweeted back a link to a place I could buy a Captain Falcon! Now I just need to find me a Mac.
