The current system that I own is from the second generation of the console's lifespan, and it still works fine with my best cartridges. A lot of the games that no longer work were bought decades ago, so most of their contacts have remained quite dirty. I've been able to rub off some of the dirt by using rubbing alcohol and Q-tips, but the rest are too dry to remove. I suppose you could say that the games technically aren't destroyed, but access to them is a bit tricky.
