AGDQ 2015 Charity Stream and Speedrun Talk!

Post by BogusMeatFactory »

Well folks, it is that time of year again when people gather together to play video games really freaking fast for charity. I am not talking about your overnight bender on Ocharina of Time, I am talking about, Awesome Games Done Quick, a charity event where speedrunners come together and bash through games at a hyperactive speed.

Currently, I am watching someone speed run through Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and it simply astounds me that someone could possibly finish the game in roughly an hour and a half.

This also brings up a great sub-genre of the video game community, Speed Runs. Who enjoys them? Why? Who doesn't? Why not?

I for one, love speed runs. It shows a lot of skill and finesse in a game that is rarely seen. I enjoy the strange speed runs that impose certain rules like, "Speed Run through Goldeneye with a two-controller-two-player setup," which by the way is pretty freaking entertaining to watch.

So do you plan on watching any of AGDQ? Any particular games you are interested in watching from their schedule?

Let the games begin!

Quite a list there, BMF! I think I'll probably keep it on the background during the days at work to see what's being played. Some of the times just seem baffling to me -- Flying through Sonic Adventure 2 / River City Ransom / Streets of Rage 2 at the speeds they've projected just seems amazing to me. Count me in.

Seriously though, Uncharted in about an hour, I don't know how these gamers do it but it's always neat. I loved the summer edition, didn't realize they did this one in the winter, is this one their main one or is it the summer games done quick?

All the same, I'm looking forward to this!

EDIT: COMMANDER KEEN 4 / 5 / 6 in 15 / 5 / 5 respectively? Wow. I'd like to see that.

Yeah this is their big one, but the summer one is also very popular. Those Commander Keen ones are probably a glitch speed run. With games like Boy and His Blob, which can be done in less than 5 utilize glitches to get into the end game, very much like how Ocharina of Time can be run.

In all honesty, I'm not as huge a fan of the glitched speed runs, at least ones that use them almost exclusively to get through the game.

I am watching this Tropical Freeze speed run and I am astounded. This game is really meant to be speed ran as there is such a brilliant flow to how everything moves, making it look really really good!

So excited for this. Especially interested in TASbot playing Pokemon Red, because that game is already so broken that they must have found something interesting to slot it in. Also looking forward to Carl Sagan playing Kaizo Mario, that game is insane even when "normal run".

Aaand, of course, no one is doing Sonic 1. :( Still excited to see Timpz run Sonic 2. And Miles running Metroid Prime is always a joy to watch.

Definitely going to be a strong lineup this year!

Did anyone see what happened for the Pokemon segment? Admittedly I didn't have the opportunity to watch any lately, been tied up with work lately. Watching Shinobi III though right now!

Edit: Dat Ninja Gaiden race! So incredible!

36 Minutes for all three Ninja Gaiden games on NES. 1-2 Second difference between the two teams at the finish.

This is what happened when Tasbot speed ran Pokemon. Freaking brilliant.

I'm excited for more of the races. They have all been spectacular. Curious to see how Goldeneye will be done. I expect lots of looking at the ground!

Look forward to this every year. I hate I have to miss so much of it for work though.

Anyway, I'm pretty psyched for the Super Metroid and Zero Mission runs coming up.

I saw the super Metroid race they did....last year I think? It was absolutely phenomenal! So much fun to watch! I as well don't have as much time as I would like, thankfully they archive it so there is another thing to add to the list to watch!
