Favorite SEGA arcade games?
Re: favorite sega arcade games?
I think VOOT is awesome in principle, but I don't get along with it particularly well on a personal level. I've always preferred Sega's arcade-y racers.

May I ask why that is? Not getting along with it I mean.marurun wrote:I think VOOT is awesome in principle, but I don't get along with it particularly well on a personal level. I've always preferred Sega's arcade-y racers.

Because the final boss can only be beaten with like 2 of the bots (or at least that's all I can manage on the DC port)

I unfortunately haven't played too many of Sega's arcade games outside of MAME, but I have played that.Sload Soap wrote:There was a much more common stand-up version of LW and a much less common sit down variant of the SWA as well.

Huh, I have only ever seen the sit down version of the SW Arcade game. I didn't know there were standing versions.

I'm with Ack and Exedeyes on this one. I have played the sit-down versions of Star Wars and Lost World a hundred times, but I've never seen the stand up version (except in your pictures).Sload Soap wrote:Two others I remember being pretty prominent in my local(ish) arcade (which was in the cinema) was the Lost World: Jurassic Park cab and the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade stand-up machine.
Both were pretty great and I was a bit disappointed neither made their way to the Dreamcast. (IRC the Lost World was shown in early DC press releases as being a launch title.) There was a much more common stand-up version of LW and a much less common sit down variant of the SWA as well.
Maybe arcades are different on the other side of the Atlantic. Maybe we have more floor space stateside, but your arcades have less room for these mega cabinets. I'm just speculating here, but maybe that's the reason that the standing models are more common in the U.K.

Here in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Pinabll Pete's there was a standing version of the Star Wars Arcade Game. Don't know if it is still there though. I think it was replaced with the pod racing game.Ack wrote:Huh, I have only ever seen the sit down version of the SW Arcade game. I didn't know there were standing versions.

There is an upright SWTA.Ack wrote:Huh, I have only ever seen the sit down version of the SW Arcade game. I didn't know there were standing versions.
When the game came out, it was one of my arcade obsessions so to speak. Periodically, I would have a few new games I would try to make absolutely perfect high score runs on, much like I do with shmups nowadays. SWTA was one of them. I would try to get the highest ranking after each game and get as close to 3 million as possible. 2.8 or even 2.9 mil usually passed for the #1 position.
One big difference with the upright SWTA -- the control stick is nowhere near as good. The sitdown version's stick had a lot more force feedback to it, and as a result, the resistance when you moved it wasn't nearly as loose as the upright's. Remember that you're controlling a set of crosshairs and you need a good level of precision. The upright's looser stick made it much harder for me to target, therefore I couldn't even get past one level at all.
There were "upright" versions of The Lost World and even House of The Dead 2. Again, I'd much rather play the deluxe versions as they were far more common.
EDIT: Those interested in a decent emulation might want to check out this video here (go to 52:45) -- SWTA running on the Supermodel (Model 3) emulator, it's near perfect!

Re: favorite sega arcade games?
There used to be a sit-down Outrun nearby when I was younger. I never cared much about racing games but Outrun always managed to captivate me. Maybe because it was more of a "driving" game as it's been called. There's just something cool about it that pulls you to the machine.
I also spent a lot of time playing Hang-On because what kid wouldn't want to ride a motorcycle!
Daytona USA is another racing game I got into. Sega just had the nack when it came to making fun driving experiences.
House of the Dead is probably the Sega arcade game I pumped the most quarters in. I just had to see it through until the end. Several times. Me and a friend spent almost an entire day at an amusement park just playing House of the Dead.
Virtual On was another addiction. It was cocaine for a mecha fan like me and the controls were just so cool. I still wish I could get my hands on a pair of Dreamcast Twinsticks. They're my Holy Grail.

picked this up a while back, but i haven't posted yet. i got one of my favorite Sega shooters for $150 from a guy on the other side of town. the almighty ZAXXON!

needs some cosmetic restoration (those top corners are pretty gnarly) but other than that it's working, monitor's in great shape, can't really complain for $150. also need to add a free play / high score save mod and i'll be in business
