sega genesis rf problem
sega genesis rf problem
I am having a fuzzy rf picture on my tv I got a modEl 1 sega genesis that was untested it did not work at first so I restored the whole thing it had some rust on the metal shielding and on the rf box on the board is there a way to fix it I don't think its ment to be that fuzzy and I have tryed other rf switches and no luck and the av works fine
Re: sega genesis rf problem
That's an inherent problem with RF. If the TV has composite AV inputs, I recommend using that instead. The Genesis doesn't have the best composite video signal, but the audio will improve greatly and you shouldn't have a snowy picture.
If RF is a must, there's a few things you could try. For starters, don't chain multiple RF adapters together. If it's set to channel 3, trying setting it to channel 4.

Re: sega genesis rf problem
You know what that metal shielding is for, right? it's to prevent electro-magnetic interference (within the confines of FCC regulations). If the metal shielding is compromised, the Genesis itself is subject to interference from other devices, and it is capable of causing interference with other devices. That includes your TV set. So what can you do about this?parker wrote:it had some rust on the metal shielding and on the rf box on the board
The answer is threefold.
- First, you need to use composite cables instead of rf cable. If you only do one thing, this is the most important in terms of picture quality. Game Trog has photos and a complete description on this page.
- Second, you need to get the Genesis as far as you reasonably can from other electronic devices (including the TV set) so as to diminish the effects of RF interference.
- Third, you could consider replacing the rf shielding inside your Genesis. It's not so hard to do if you have tin snips and a drill. Be careful not to cut yourself on sharp metal. Make sure you've had a tetanus shot some time in the last ten years.
Re: sega genesis rf problem
If the metal shield only has minor surface rust then I wouldn't think it's compromised.

Re: sega genesis rf problem
Good point, Ziggy. Without seeing it for myself, I have no direct way of gauging the condition of the rf shielding. I just know that parker is getting a very fuzzy picture.
In either case, the composite cable is the first order of business.

Re: sega genesis rf problem
I have been usein a 32x with my sega genesis and if this helps it is the original 1989 model with alteRd beast and the rust is pretty bad at some parts of the metal it is not even shiny anymore
Re: sega genesis rf problem
I wouldn't blame the rust just yet. Do you get the snow without the 32X connected?parker wrote:I have been usein a 32x with my sega genesis and if this helps it is the original 1989 model with alteRd beast and the rust is pretty bad at some parts of the metal it is not even shiny anymore
Re: sega genesis rf problem
Yes but not trew the av from the rf my other genesis doesn't have that fuzzy video error and is using the Same rf box
Re: sega genesis rf problem
And it's not just a fuzzy picture it's got lines on the screen
Re: sega genesis rf problem
Can you try and take a picture of it and post it here?parker wrote:And it's not just a fuzzy picture it's got lines on the screen
