DOOM 64 was a different game from DOOM. The level designs are different, and so is the atmosphere. DOOM 64 has a more menacing soundtrack and though it starts on a space station like original DOOM, as you move through the game it becomes decidedly more occult-like and satanic. It's almost like a Lovecraft progression. I remember getting utterly freaked when I was younger because in one of the later levels you could hear the sound of crying babies in the background, which I found really disturbing. DOOM 64 gets dark.

this is what I love about this hobby. No matter how much you read up, you're always learning something new. Consider me intrigued. So is EX a standalone release, or is it a mod for another game? I've actually wondered if a similar recreation was ever made for Golden Eye because it seems like something I should play through, but I have zero interest in N64.

EDIT: Actually, it's totally off-topic here, but I've thought about making a thread for quality/faithful fan remakes. I feel like there's some pretty interesting stuff out there.

EX needs a DOOM 64 rom to pull the art assets from, but it doesn't need an emulator, so it's kind of a mod and kind of a standalone. It's nice to have more options with EX. You can even look up and down with your mouse rather than be locked on the vertical access. Though I devoted more time to original DOOM back in the day, I've always kind of liked DOOM 64 better. It's just darker and scarier, but still very much DOOM. You should definitely play it.

Here's a few new shots with increased gamma correction. Hopefully these are more visible:

You have to admit that the N64 has the best 5th gen Nintendo and Rare library.

Hey JT, did the Doom 64 EX guys manage to successfully port the laser weapon that's only available in Doom 64?

I've been playing a bit of Tower of Guns lately. It's a fun little FPS game with roguelike elements wherein the levels are randomly generated and you have to shoot your way through the tower, picking up power ups and upgrades as you go along. There are tons and tons of slow moving bullets, which makes this sort of like a bullet hell game in first person. It's got a quirky sense of humor too. These are the bugbots, which the developer had to keep in the game at his wife's insistence. Everything else is bullets and guns, but these little guys are cute and loving (you can still kill them though if you're not so nice).
