After watching the Star Wars Holiday Special after Christmas, my wife and I decided to try to scrub our brains clean of that movie by watching the original trilogy. And by original, I not only mean episodes IV, V, and VI, but we also watched the unaltered VHS versions of the first theatrical releases where Han shot Greedo first, the ewoks sing the Yub Nub song, you don't see Hayden Christensen as Anakin's ghost, and there isn't a bunch of unnecessary digitally added crap floating around in every scene.

This ha ha....oddly I think I tracked down a copy of the original theatrical vhs's at goodwill for the IV and V half tempted to see if they work but after I sleep only because I want to see what I'm missing and then promptly download the despecialized edition or something(I don't think I have the patience to try and find a better quality(legal version) just to see what I'm missing since I don't think I want to see the special editions after all I've heard about them...

The laserdisc versions were the best.

Into the Woods, just today. I rather liked it. Wish they'd done the singing live like in Les Miserables, but it was still well-done and much closer to the play than I would have expected from Disney. Quite satisfied.

How to train your Dragons 2

Gotta admit I was one of the suckers who went and bought the dreamworks bundle on itunes for that $100(though paid for with giftcards and christmas money) best $100 I sent down the toliet for movies I've seen and haven't seen. Especially in the case of haven't seen when it comes to this one. I've been meaning to see this one for quite awhile and man in my view a great sequel to the original. Now if only the ending hadn't been a little cheesy on some points as it got to them but still worth that watch ^_^ (now if only disney would hurry up and release some of the bundles that I think europe may have gotten I got more quickly eliminate some desires on my want lists...)

Interesting, especially since it seems like Disney is doing a lot of revisits to old tales they've already done and either expanding on, or even retelling in some cases. I actually really want to see this one...

Starry Eyes (2014)

I really enjoyed the first 3/4ths of this movie, but for whatever reason I just couldn't grasp the last part. Without spoiling anything, I'm not sure if the ending has religious connotations that went over my head or what the deal was. Definitely leaves more questions than answers, which can be a good thing (like 'Under The Skin'), but not necessarily in this case.

So I watched Buckaroo Banzai with some friends today. It was... something. I hadn't seen it since I was a kid. I really don't remember it being so weird.

Into the Woods

We've seen the fractured fairy tale on screen many times in the last fifteen years. Between all the Shreks, the Happily N'ever afters, Penelope, Enchanted, and more recently Maleficent, is there reason to see yet another movie that tramples our fairy tale tropes? Maybe, but if there is reason, Into the Woods is not it.

Don't get me wrong; Into the Woods does many things right. The sets and costumes are beautiful without overwhelming the audience. The cast was brilliant with scene stealing performances by Emily Blunt, Tracy Ullman, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, and newcomer Lilla Crawford. Cinematographer Dion Beebe did an exceptional job lighting and shooting every scene.

Despite all the great production values, something is rotten in the woods. Put frankly, this musical stinks of Sondheim. A great movie musical gives the audience several musical set pieces with a good melody and a memorable hook that's easy to sing along with. The audience should go home humming along to the tunes and have the music stuck in their minds for days or weeks after. That's not the case here. Rather, we are left with Stephen Sondheim's melodramatic mess of singsong dialogue. Do any of the songs have a proper structure with an introduction, verses, choruses, refrains, and a conclusion? Not quite. It seems to me that Sondheim must write clever lyrics first, then shoe-horn music underneath as best he can make it fit. Anna Kendrick and James Corden flex their vocal cords admirably to sing this poorly composed mess. Who else (except other classically trained singers) could possibly make Sondheim's excuse for music sound good?

You know how certain video games allow the user to adjust the music volume separate from the dialogue volume? I wish I could do that with Into the Woods. There's great talent here in terms of acting, wardrobe, set design, and cinematography, but none of that can overcome a musical with bad music.

Verdict: Rent it, or wait for it on Netflix. Don't waste a movie ticket on Into the Woods.
