Digital to Physical

Post by wclem »

It has happened in the past where a games goes physical after a digital only release. Looking at you Ducktales!!! I want to try to have this info in one centralized area. I would like to keep this to mainly consoles but feel free to chime in with PC releases.

I thought it would be cool if people hearing of these things happening would post it in here. It blows to find out too late when it happens. So far I know of:

Terraria
Pure Pool
Pure Chess
Stick it to the Man
Retro City Rampage DX

For PC digital to physical a company called "The Indie Box" exist. A monthly subscription service that offers one off orders also. I may pick a few of them up also. It should really appeal to PC collectors a lot.

There is at least one more current gen that I know I am missing. I want to keep this to games that were announced as digital only or started as digital only and go on to become physical releases.

Also, PLEASE no discussion of the benefits or drawbacks of physical or digital. I am sure most people would agree it has been beat to death. It would be cool though if people threw in info about playable versions that got physical release in other regions. (like some of the RE games) I will try to update this post if people want to add to the list.

As a side note, physical does not mean disc only. It could be official released media of any kind. USB stick, cartridge (yeah good luck) or anything else they can come up with.

Braid wound up with a physical release, offhand.

There are a number of console digital compilations.

On the 360, there's the Capcom Digital Collection, two volumes of Konami Classics, Qubed (Rez HD, Every Extend Extra Extreme, and Lumines Live!), and a couple other XBLA compilations at least.

PS3 has the Best of PSN and the Journey Collection.

I think the Assassin's Creed Americas bundle kinda-sorta makes Liberation HD a physical release? Similar to how Killzone HD was included in that collection, where it needs to be fully installed to play, but does install off the disc.

I was aware of those yes. I should have been more specific. I was looking for games that recently or are slated to get these releases. The hope is that people will not miss out on these as they seem to fly under the radar sometimes. The PSN games are great examples but I think the 360 games mostly seem to be compilations of older physical games?

There are alot of examples on XB360 where digital releases get an eventual physical re-release. Wouldn't Genesis Ultimate Collection count considering it house the SoR series which were released digitally before.

There is also games that only saw digital release here, but got physical releases elsewhere like Capcom's Darkstalkers Resurrection and Strider. Would these count also?

Physical releases in other regions that can be played in the USA are great for a list. I knew of Strider but I felt it has been around long enough that it was not worth listing. I am trying to keep the thread to current or upcoming stuff. I do encourage people to mention these games that have been around awhile as some people do not know about them. Also if you know what region and about how much it should cost I would like that info too. Maybe people could bring up when other regions got collectors version that we did not?

Getting info like this for me and I am sure others is kind of hit or miss as sometimes it seems nobody advertises it or gets mention in a forum in a not often read thread somewhere.

What would you qualify as a physical release? Anything that comes out of indiebox happens to end up it appears on a USB drive with no DRM at all stuck on it.

Also the 2000 only run release of Retro City Rampage DX on PS4 needs to be listed.

Indiebox had: Teslagrad, Escape Goat 2, Forced, MouseCraft, Luftrausers, Brutal Legend, Steamworld Dig, and Rogue Legacy so far.

The Metal Slug games have been digital for some time on one service or another, then the Wii and PS2 got that Metal Slug Anthology package. This was also done in part with the other SNK stuff like the KOF and Samurai Shodown bundles in part as some of those hit mobile or console digital platforms.
