The thread of super awesome fan remakes

Post by noiseredux »

I was inspired by a conversation we were having over the in the screenshots thread... there are lots of games out that there that have been remade by fans. These are sometimes standalone exe's, or sometimes mods for other games. But I'm interested in discovering some of the better quality/cooler/more interesting ones. One of the things that's nice is that these remakes will often be for a game that was original a console-only release. Other times you'll get remakes that are meant to improve a game in some certain way. So please post pics, links, and descriptions and I'll try to keep the OP updated with the list we come up with.

The first one that I would like to point out is a wonderful re-purposing of the 3DO version of Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters to modern PCs. The game is free and available for all to download and is continuously worked on to create new and exciting content to the game.

Fans of games like Faster Than Light will be elated at this delightful open world game! You play as the last remnants of Earth, enslaved by an intergalactic species. With limited resources and know-how, you must escape your solar system and start an uprising throughout the galaxy. You do so by collecting and selling resources on planets, interacting with other species and amassing an army to fight off your oppressors. The game is fully voiced and is such a blast to play! I can not stress it enough!

The Silver Lining (unofficial King's Quest sequel)

This game has been in and out of legal trouble numerous times since it was released in 2010. It was developed by Phoenix Online studios, who have gone on to do a number of other nice adventure games (Cognition, the Gabriel Knight remake, etc.). There are five episodes to this game, though the fifth remains unfinished, and though they have a pass from Activision for now, it's not clear whether they will be able to complete it now that Activision is doing their own King's Quest sequel. The Silver Lining, as you can see below, has some nice graphics that look better than a lot of the original King's Quest series. The game is a respectable King's Quest title that was generally praised, though some say it didn't fully measure up with its puzzles.

I'm really excited for Another Metroid 2 Remake.

It looks very authentic in the vein of the GBA games, which is awesome to me. Metroid 2 I just can't get into, with how huge Samus' sprite is and clunky it plays, the lack of colors, I've never been able to finish it... but to play a remade version sounds great to me. It just looks like the third GBA Metroid we never got.

Just going to throw this out there since it's an offshoot of that project -- http://urquanmastershd.com/

Same game, redone in HD.

AGDInteractive Studios do amazing remakes of Sierra games, including voice acting, etc. They also have optios to disable dead ends, which can remove frustration if that sort of thing bothered you in the originals.

They are actually even better than remakes as they tie in the overall "dark robe," storyline that was evident in the later games. King's Quest II especially is a very different storyline that, in all honesty, improves the series a million fold.

Also, the Quest For Glory II remake does allow you to import your character from the first game, as well as export your character into the third in the series. They did an astounding job on that one.

3 of my favorite fan remakes on the SNES

Metroid Zero Mission- a complete port of the NES classic using Super Metroid assets

Zelda Parallel Worlds Redux- a great fanmade game and the Redux version is much more balanced gameplay wise

Super Mario World Return to Dinosaur Island- an excellent romhack of SMW that feels like a true sequel to the original.
