I've honestly never had a problem with the updates or installations on PS3 or PS4. I seem to remember the odd game that seemed to take ages, I think Heavy Rain was one, GTA 5 was another, but most didn't seem to take long.

It's not usually a big problem, but it can be noticeable. GTAV on PS4 is kinda ridiculous - the original release of MGS4 also was, since it swapped install data each chapter or something. Loading up a random save could mean sitting there watching Snake smoke for a while. I think they changed that when they patched in Trophy support.

I just realized that every PS4 game needs to completely install to the hard drive before you can play, it says on the back of the package. GTA V need 55GB! that 500GB hard drive isn't looking so big now, can you install your own hd like you can the PS3?

Yup. Super easy to do so.

I'm actually one of the persons that thinks it's a great idea. Reduces wear and tear on the disc drive.

Well time to find a 2TB drive, because my 500GB drive is already half full O.O

how does the 360 update in 2min? Some game updates are like 500mb .Worst I have seen is I think LBP 2. It had maybe 8GB or something like that.

In my experience the vast majority of games would apply a very small patch at boot up on 360 that would take seconds. You could put the exact same game into PS3 and have to wait several minutes before you even see the intro animations. Case in point Skate. Get a vanilla 360 and vanilla PS3 and see which one starts up first. You could be well on your way in the game on 360 before you even get the chance to start the PS3 version. That's the issue i'm talking about. Some games had large updates on both platforms. The issue was that in the vast majority of cases the update on PS3 was magnitudes larger than the 360 version. There's a reason all my multiplatform games are on 360 and not PS3 and it's not due to fidelity.

Doesn't Microsoft have very strict limits on how big an update on the Xbox 360 can be? Or so I have heard.

Yeah, thanks to the non-HD SKUs that was the case for a long time however when they retired that SKU they removed that requirement. I did notice that updates began to creep in size as time went on.

For all the talk of F2P and all that noise, I think huge mandatory patches might be the single worst thing to come out of the last gen. It sucks so much when I decide to play some random game and the it's like "oh wait, well, I guess I'll play in 45 minutes then, gotta download a gig and a half first." And then the patch doesn't even add new content or make noticeable changes.

The worst thing about digital is wanting to buy a game (defense grid 2) and not being able to damn buy it. If I could just drive down to Gamestop or whatever damn store and buy it I would. When the network goes down so do digital only games.
