I know the Wii shop is still online but its on "life support" . I doubt the servers will be online in 2020. All servers and online support for Dreamcast, NGC, and oXbox are dead so why the Wii Shop will continue to be around? In comparison NES games from the 80's are still around.
If games are tied to an online service, like it will NOT run unless Steam is online, then it has similar restrictions as hardware specific games are.
@Cronozilla
I believe once the game is in digital file form (This is what I meant by digital release), it will be easy to port, mod, or emulate. When its in physical form, like PS4 disc, it will be hard to run else where. Ex. My computer can not play Mario 64 cartridge but it can play the rom.
@BogusMeatFactory
The point is its easier to mod, support, and enhance a PC game over a console game. Agree or not? Think Doom and Goldeneye 64. Its not about Phantasy Star

Disc-based games are incredibly easy to play elsewhere. I can pop in a Playstation disc into my PC and play it on an emulator. Same for PS2, Saturn and Wii.RCBH928 wrote:

Cartridge based games are a different story BUT things like the Retron are already showing you that it is possible. Companies are trying to keep those cartridges alive with these new emulator systems.

Before Retrode decided it wasn't going to make them anymore, there were USB cart adapters so you could play the cartridges on your PC.BogusMeatFactory wrote:Disc-based games are incredibly easy to play elsewhere. I had never heard that before, but it sounds awesome. Shame they stopped making them but probably weren't ever going to be big sellers.Cronozilla wrote:...

oh wow i totally missed that happening
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Some one needs to get Stone Age Gamer to contact the guy about making them (he says right on his site that if some one wants to produce them that they can contact him about it). I've been wanting one for years and missed out on getting one (I'll gladly buy one used, if any one has one they wanna sell).

It's definitely something I'd like to see continue. Get some N64 and TG16 ones going. I'm almost positive I saw that he had designed them already, but didn't manufacture any due to cost. It might have been someone else, though.

I hope one day, somewhere in China, a factory will make Game Gear sockets.
I need to play my Game Gear carts on something like a Retron.

Just beat Shantae on Wii U.
Game is just about right on difficulty for the most part... then you get to the last level. Holy crap. The difficulty ramps to 11 and beyond. Ridiculous.
I managed to not ever die before getting to the last level - then I just died over and over again.
Fun game though, I just don't ever want to do that last level again.

I've played a lot of Call of Duty I'm my day but I've had the most fun on Black Ops 2 on Wii U. There's about 1000 or so people on at most from what I've seen but most are in the team deathmatch playlist. All around great time.
