The PS4 thread
Re: The PS4 thread
Sometimes PS3 is slow and sometimes fast. I noticed its fast when downloading digital games, but maybe its slow in updating the games and the firmware.
Re: The PS4 thread
My system is fast on the download and install especially compared to the PS3. When I got the Last of Us a few days back it installed in little time to start, and then when it applied the patch that went in a matter of a few minutes, and the size was big enough it could have been the hour you had. this is a problem on your end, not Sony this time.
Re: The PS4 thread
I've never really got the complaints about game installs or downloads. Is it that hard to munch on some chips, check your emails, or occupy your time until it's finished?
I'll admit GTA5's install time made me chuckle a little, pretty sure it took 30 minutes or so.

Re: The PS4 thread
The 2gb update for Destiny only took around 40 minutes to download last night and maybe 2-3 minutes to install. Also had an additional 222mb update when I launched it but that took only 7 minutes including the install. Overall it seems to be just as good if not better then the PS3.
Issue might just have been the heavy traffic over the last few days thanks to the DDoS attack and Christmas rush.

Re: The PS4 thread
Amusingly the PC ends up having the better experience these days. Assuming you keep your PC running most of the time your Steam stuff will keep up to date, for free. In console land the only auto updating features require a paid subscription and I don't know how well they manage things like downloading updates for a disc game you played a while ago (they probably don't, as there's a decent chance you don't have that disc anymore).Xeogred wrote:I've never really got the complaints about game installs or downloads. Re: The PS4 thread
PS4 manages it fairly well like Steam attempts to do if you leave it in a deep sleep mode. It powers the system enough to know when a hit comes from the server that a game update or system update is present and fires up the system enough to do it in the background so you're good to go when you come back to it. The PS4 will also do those things in the background while you're working on another game or app, or even the game in question then let you know the patch is ready to apply when it's done. The PS4 is nothing like the pain in the ass slowness and waiting game stuff PS3 was made of.
Re: The PS4 thread
Im not sure what ended up happening with my friends ps4, but he left it at my place to finish what it was doing, and also download the last of us. I woke up to come check on it after letting it do its thing through the night. First, it was unresponsive, the power light was on, the controller was on, but no signal to the TV. Had to pull the power cable to get it to reboot
Once it came back, and scolded me for not shutting down properly, it seemed to be ok, The Last of Us had downloaded and installed fine. I went to check the game that we were updating in the first place (WWE 2k15) and it would get stuck at the first loading screen with the WWE logo spinning in the corner.
Decided to delete the WWE data, and redownload the update, and what I found was a 25gb file, I assume the game installs? Went to delete it, and it took FOREVER, no progress bar, just said "please wait". I went to run some errands while it did its thing, and when I came back it was stuck in the deep sleep mode, hard reboot. Once it was back up, I downloaded the update in 3 minutes, and it installed instantly, and everything seems to work normally now. I hope it was just a one off incident, and my friend doesnt have any more issues.

The problem was that it was vastly inferior to the experience you had on the 360. Pop a game into the 360 and it would say it needed an update, accept and it would be done in 2 minutes tops. That exact same game on PS3 would say it needs an update, it then takes you out of the game to the download/install screen that you can't get out of unless you cancel the update entirely and then would take anywhere from 5 minutes to 4 hours (update for Motorstorm) to download and install. That's the issue. Why does one machine do the exact same thing in seconds that the competitor takes hours doing?

You guys will never understand how it feels to have a 90GB cap per month ISP($100)- for the whole family!
@Niode
how does the 360 update in 2min? Some game updates are like 500mb .Worst I have seen is I think LBP 2. It had maybe 8GB or something like that.

I think a big difference between the two is mandatory installs.RCBH928 wrote: @Niode

The 360 has always had a HDD-less model on the market, providing motivation for developers to make their game work entirely off the disc. There are games that require a HDD (FFXI, Forza 3, Titanfall, oXbox backwards compatibility, etc), but usually it's optional, if even available.
On the other hand, the PS3 often requires at least some data be installed. The likely reason being that the Blu-ray drive it uses is only a 2X unit, which is significantly slower than even the 12X DVD drive the 360 uses (~9MB/sec versus ~16MB/sec).
End result is that the 360 does tend to have a better "pop in a new game" experience.
