Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Mystic Quest is better than the vast majority of Final Fantasy games.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Mystic Quest is simplistic, but it's not as bad as some people think. There is a certain charm to it, and touches like having enemies change to show how much health they have left does make for a nice touch.

I like how the enemies are straight out of the SaGa games.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Surely there's some FF sprites in the SaGa games somewhere... maybe?
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Plus the 4x2 layout of the monster sprites. The game really is just a stripped down version of SaGa 3 that's actually a Final Fantasy game in all territories.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I like how the enemies are straight out of the SaGa games.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Mystic Quest has a decent presentation, but that is literally the only thing it has going for it.
Even the worst, bottom of the bucket RPGs are more compelling. If we are going to hype an RPG for not being as bad as it seems, lets make that Beyond the Beyond or something, not MQ. People reading these threads might actually go and buy the game, and thats a disservice to retro RPG enthusiasts.
If you really want to experience MQ, just watch a Lets Play. Its practically an identical experience.
Oh, and in case you didn't notice, I'm not very fond of the game

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
My brief defense of Mystic Quest:
The dungeons are constructed well.
The music kicks ass.
The enemies look cool as shit and are "animated" - nice change of pace for a classic FF game.
The graphics are nice and colorful.
The game is the perfect length. Straightforward with no bullshit.
I think people tend to compare it to the other (better) Final Fantasy games on the same system. Sure it's way worse than FFVI but that doesn't make it a bad game on its own. I dig it. To me the "bad" RPGs of that era are the ones that are unbalanced or overly cryptic or are repetitive/grindy to the point of insanity. Mystic Quest isn't one of those games.
