CVG to close doors after 33 years

CVG is a British institution. It was one of the first gaming magazines and it was one of the best. I have every issue from about 1991 until they stopped publishing in print and moved to web content sometime around 2004/5. There was just something special about CVG, I think it must have been the odd monochrome yellow sub-mag you got in the middle of every issue. I can still remember the weird smell it had. It was part of the holy trinity of gaming press in my eyes. CVG, Edge and Retro Gamer are easily the finest gaming journalism you can find. It's a shame that Future have decided to close CVG but it leaves a stellar legacy even if the web content never really quite lived up to their printed content.

RIP CVG

That's a shame. Is it just me or is Future a company that seems to want to put game media out of business over there? They took down Nintendo Power, Sony stuff, and so on one after another over the last few years. Theyre like the print version of EA buying up, then killing things people like.

Well Edge is published by Future so there's still hope. I don't think there is a place for your average 'news & reviews' mags anymore so I can understand why a lot of these mags went out of print. Review information is more immediate online and often by the time the piece goes out in print the game is already released and reviewed by every man and his dog online. Edge tends to have more opinion pieces and talks about the process of making games more than the games themselves. It's still an enjoyable mag to this day and is heralded as the highest echelon of gaming journalism in this country.

Edge stopped doing their website - which totally sucks. Good magazine though.

I got a bunch CVG issues in the 1990s, they had excellent multiplatform coverage, and mostly fair reviews across the board. Unfortunately like everyone else they got caught up in the 32-bit hype but that's history now
