I believe the Dragon Quest games are the ultimate comfort food JRPGs.

See I find it bizarre that you say the RetroN5 is the only emulation you like. To me, it's the worst of both worlds -- you've got an emulator that you need to pay the extortionist prices for games on! I mean if you're going to emulate, emulate! For the price of a RetroN5 you can get an Ouya and load it up with every rom in existence. Yes, the ability to use original controllers is nice, but you can get USB adapters... for about the price of 1 good SNES rpg.

The Retron 5 is godly.

It allows you to play/collect legit carts while still reaping the benefits of save states and translation patches. It's the best of both worlds.

Different strokes I suppose. I'm not a huge fan of save states, though I'm not violently against them. I will certainly give that translation patches are a nicety, but I go for Everdrives or other high-quality flash carts for that.

And mostly I love the Retron 5 because of someone else buying one and thus reselling their YPbPr modded NES toploader to me

Re: Save states - Personally, I don't mind them. The only reason the games of yore didn't have them is that the technology did not exist/was too expensive at the time. That, and a lot of games back then were home console versions of the quarter munchers at the arcades...

But if save state technology existed back in the NES days or the 16-bit era... what game would NOT have included them?

I couldn't agree more and I couldn't have said it any better myself. Dragon Quest is the only JRPG franchise that I have ever been able to muster the patience for, for some reason.

I love it when people sell their 2nd gen consoles to fund the purchase of arcade stuff.

As I was telling someone else the other night, I didn't think I'd care for the save states but it is nice to bypass the title screen and file select every time you fire up an RPG. It also replaces those long ass old passwords. Lastly, it lets you split longer games (like, say, Rygar or Super Mario Bros. 3) into 2+ sittings without leaving the NES or whatever on pause.

GameFAQs is running the closest poll ever. It's FFVI vs. FFVII and it's been within 100 votes with FFVI leading since lunch. They're at 19k total votes so far.

The fact that people can rank VII up with VI blows my mind.

Don't get me wrong. I love both. They are probably the top two "numbered" Final Fantasy titles.

But VI wipes the floor with VII. VI is my favorite game of all time. VII is like #30 or so.

To be honest Bone, for something maybe even more perplexing...

I think I rate FFIV-FFVII equally.

FFIV - Consistently amazing and the aesthetics/music are just magical
FFV - ExDeath is my favorite FF villain thesedays and it's the hardest/best combat
FFVI - Does everything right other than being a cakewalk
FFVII - Love the atmosphere/materia system and it's just damn fun

I see Final Fantasy VI vs VII as nothing more than a battle of the nostalgia since both games were the first JRPG for many. Both have their share of flaws, but both are also very good. Since replaying them countless times over the years, I really couldn't say one is that much better than the other. Really, I kind of agree with Xeogred that the FF games are often a neck and neck comparison. Square was really on fire for awhile there, pumping out top notch games left and right without fail.

Something interesting though, VI was ranked lower than III, IV, V, VII, VIII, IX, and X in the famous Famitsu survey of Japan's Top 100 games, making it one of the least popular games of the original 10 series franchise.
