Where the movement is restricted -- in the case of nintendo systems, where it only goes in 8 directions.
Think of it like a compass -- you can move your joystick N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, SW... you can't move it NNE or ENE or whatnot.

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

I think he is referring to joysticks that have a mold outside them to limit there movement to smaller degrees of movement.RCBH928 wrote:what is a gated joystick?casterofdreams wrote:The one thing I really disliked of Nintendo controllers of the past was the nonsense "gated" joysticks.
Such as the gamecube controller here has a Octagon shape around it.

But the octagon didn't limit anything - it was still entirely possible to point wherever you liked. It just helped you be more precise for the eight cardinal directions.

It is shit for games where you need that movement to be fluid (most arcade style games, for example).alienjesus wrote:But the octagon didn't limit anything - it was still entirely possible to point wherever you liked. It just helped you be more precise for the eight cardinal directions.

You mean games based on arcades that have gated joysticks?dsheinem wrote:It is shit for games where you need that movement to be fluid (most arcade style games, for example).alienjesus wrote:But the octagon didn't limit anything - it was still entirely possible to point wherever you liked. Most arcade sticks have gates, they are just on the bottom instead of the top. But DSH was most likely referring to the ubiquitous Happ competition stick of the 90s American arcade, whcih does not have a true gate. It does however have a square actuator.MrPopo wrote:You mean games based on arcades that have gated joysticks?dsheinem wrote:It is shit for games where you need that movement to be fluid (most arcade style games, for example).alienjesus wrote:But the octagon didn't limit anything - it was still entirely possible to point wherever you liked. The only true gateless sticks I know of are led based and $150-200 per.

I love to lodge my stick into one of the octagon corners.

Yes, I know that most arcade sticks have been gated. That's why I never said that gates are in and of themselves a problem, but that the GCN "gate" is restrictive of fluid movement.fastbilly1 wrote: Most arcade sticks have gates, they are just on the bottom instead of the top. And yes, that has to do with its position as fast suggested - there's a difference between the "gate" on a GCN and the gate in an arcade stick in most CPs. In the former, the analog stick is in close enough proximity to the "gate" (on the surface of the controller) that you can very easily and regularly feel the "notches" as you move the analog stick around. In the latter, the gate is far enough down the stick that accidentally getting "stalled" in a corner while doing circular motions is pretty unlikely.
