What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations
Re: What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendat
Can I get an opinion on the series Ranma 1/2? I've known about this anime since I was like 9.. 20 years later I've still never watched the series. Is it worth obtaining and watching?

Ranma 1/2 is an action comedy by Rumiko Takahashi (who later made Inu Yahsa) with memorable characters and a gender-bending gimmick. I won't bother with a plot synopsis; you can find that on wikipedia or anywhere else.
My opinion is that Ranma 1/2 is fun, not terribly deep, and settles into a rut about halfway into the series. It's a fun rut, but it's still a rut. Don't expect a whole lot of plot development after all the recurring characters are introduced. Just kick back and go along for the ride. enjoy a few chuckles.
There's plenty of pseudo-martial arts action. This is all really over the top, impossible stuff that you would expect from anime. Fighters jump thirty feet in the air, cartwheel in midair, and punch a whole through a mountain. That type of ridiculous nonsense is common here.
There's lots of sexual humor. Plenty of perky teenage boobies, old pervy men, and poor Ranma getting bonked on the head every time he "accidentally" sees Akane naked. All the standard anime tropes are here.
The animation style is very much 1980s anime. Don't expect it to look as good as modern anime does. Anime was a bit more cutesy styled back in the '80s.
Ranma 1/2 was very popular and very influential on anime that came after. You'll see things in Ranma that became standard tropes in anime for years after: a teenage boy living in a house full of gorgeous girls, trips to bath houses when hilarity ensues, a girl who can pull a hammer out of thin air when she's mad, et cetera.
This is a long series, and it's addictive. Buying all the DVDs outright would cost a pretty penny. Look into a streaming service to view this series.
Overall I give Ranma 1/2 a positive review. It's fun, silly, titillating and addictive.

Ranma is fantastic. One of the classics. Looks like DVDs are being reissued now? Very cool.

I've been watching Attack on Titan lately and I am a little past the halfway mark on the first season. The story has a great tug-and-pull tension between hope and hopelessness. There are moments where you think the humans don't stand a chance against the titans, and then it turns around and you think they have figured out a winning strategy. But then there's a turn of events that makes you think that the last battle won was just a flash in the pan. The series has a lot of interesting things to say about the fight for survival, and whether humanity is worth saving. It's this last point that makes this show feel particularly dark. In this fictional setting of humans vs titans, the real battle seems to be about misanthropy vs human value. The show sometimes plods along and feels like the pacing is dragging, but it's so interesting to watch a cartoon that dares to deal with such fundamental aspects of human existence.

My main issue with Attack on Titan was how the drama would come off as rather forced at times. The material itself is enough to keep a high tension atmosphere, but the voice actors would still FEEL THE NEED TO SCREAM BECAUSE SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT IS GOING ON to remind you that the show means business. That often broke the immersion for me.
Also the fact that it seems to abide by typical shounen rules, as in no one but useless auxiliary characters will ever die, tends to undermine the otherwise very bleak and existential tone that separates it from the rest.
I still liked it though. But mainly for the intense action sequences, and for being the first thing in a long time to try and create a unique apocalypse tale that doesn't involve zombies or bombs.
