Tanooki wrote:Actually blame MS. Nintendo invented that layout back in 1990 for the Super Famicom and has used it ever since. MS like a lot of things they 'develop' stole that layout and just reversed the letters. They even use the same 4 colors of the Super Famicom controller buttons too (red, yellow, green and blue.)
it's the same layout as the Dreamcast controller...

Sega Dreamcast has the same layout as the Xbox and 360 but different colors.

I've spent a hell of a lot more time with the 360 controller than any other controller in my life combined.

Edit: you beat me to it Apple.

I'd rather not suck an Atari 2600 joystick. 30+ years of grit and grime...

Nintendo has always been the controller innovator.
The NES d-pad was revolutionary. Now seen on every controller.
The Genesis and PC Engine both had redesigned controllers to match the number of buttons the SNES one had (for fighting games and whatnot).
N64 launched with a thumbstick for 3D games. Sony and Sega later redesigned their controllers with this feature added.
Wii had motion controllers. Sony and MS follow with Move and Kinect.

Nintendo puts a touch screen on their handhelds, Sony does the same with the vita. The Wii-U makes a touch screen on their console. Sony does the same with the PS4.

The one thing I really disliked of Nintendo controllers of the past was the nonsense "gated" joysticks.

Pretty annoying. Happy they did it differently with the Wii U.

eeeeehhhhhhhh you can make arguments for this one, Saturn 3D pad was out earlier (though that.... thing isn't exactly comfy) and there's a few other examples of attempts at analog control sticks

Apple I'm playing through Geometry Wars Galaxies on the Wii and I'm using the Classic controller. Those gated sticks are killin' me!

Gated, the thought of an angled piece of plastic around the stick is just dumb but sometimes it's not. Sometimes it can be helpful with a platformer, a pac-man type, or even a fighting game to feel where those points of direction are, but most often it does get in the way.

I'm aware a lot of people say the game is terrible, but at $5 it was hard to say no. It's an online only price, though, it's still $30 in store.

Even if it is terrible, I'm sure I can get $5 of enjoyment out of it.
Thanks for this as I was able to pick up a copy today, guy working there was shocked at the price and thought originally it was a used copy though that ended quickly when he saw it. NintendoLife gave it a 7/10 so it's not a terrible game.
