What was the last movie you've seen?

When RotK EE came out it was finals week for us, so a bunch of my friends were camped in my dorm room while we marathoned. It was quite the experience. I keep wanting to do it again but I stop when I realize I could work on my backlog all day instead.

It can definitely be fun. But it takes a toll, and you question whether or not it's a good use of that time. Probably because you actually managed to organize a consecutive 12+ hour block of time, which is likely unusual now, and you're using it watching movies you've seen already.

Is that because you started one of those "family" things? Those'll definitely be a time sink. I can regularly get together a 12 hour block, but my Backloggery demands attention.

Battle of Five Armies = letdown

I can't really endorse the Hobbit trilogy. Too much fluff from what was in the books, too much hamminess in the acting, too much of the same action over and again in each film. The Battle of Five Armies had its moments, but most of them were contrived moments of fanservice.

As much good as I think Jackson did by Tolkien in the LOTR trilogy, which I found to be really quite strong, he did just as much harm to the original work with the follow up trilogy. It is a shame that this will be The Hobbit that most people know.

Battle of Five Armies = letdown

I havent seen the 3rd yet, but it does have more than just the Hobbit, it has some of the extra tie in stuff he wrote for LotR. They did also add some stuff or show things that were briefly mentioned in the book. I think 2 movies wouldve been enough. The movies are also definitely more action oriented as it shows the whole groups actions instead of just following Bilbo's POV.

With that being said, I enjoyed the first 2 Hobbits and plan to see the 3rd this weekend.

Long before Jackson's films, I was widely read in Tolkien and considered myself somewhat of an amateur Tolkien scholar, so I recognize the stuff in the films that was elsewhere other than in The Hobbit...that's not in itself the issue.

There's just too much liberty taken with the original work(s) for my liking in the interest of making what Jackson considers to be a more entertaining film. A lot of the additions dramatically change the tone, alter or add characters, etc. In the LOTR trilogy of films these excesses and shifts were sparing and smart, in The Hobbit trilogy they do a lot to undo the character and charm of that book.

Yeah the love triangle thing and addition of Tauriel is meh, and some of the over the top and at times goofy action can feel out of place, but there are also a lot of great moments as well. The Hobbit had an uphill battle to begin with as I think it isnt as movie friendly as the LotR.
