How does it compare to Final Fantasy for you? Assuming you've probably cleared most of those too. Maybe it's apples and oranges.
I've beaten FF1-10 and it feels awesome to say that, but... haven't beaten a single DQ haha. I always think maybe DQ4 would be a good place to start.

Imagine if Final Fantasy never jumped the shark. Like, if they realized they had reached perfection with part 6 and just kept rolling with that formula.
That's what Dragon Quest is like.
Do you have a DS or 3DS? DS remake of IV would be the perfect place to start actually.

For some reason I've owned the DS remake of DQV since it was new, never touched it though haha. I should finally check it out once a get a 3DS sometime. (I'm not even sure if I could find my DS, lol).

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I have beat the following DQs:
The GBC remake of Dragon Warrior. The DS version of Dragon Quest IV. The DS version of Dragon Quest V. I'm now playing through Dragon Quest VIII on PS2.
Of what I've actually finished, I'd say Dragon Quest IV DS was the best. I really enjoyed IV's character specific chapter approach, kept the story interesting. I certainly thought it was a much better game than the overrated V DS was. Not that V is a bad game, it's just not as amazing in my opinion as people make it out to be.
As far Dragon Quest VIII, I have nothing but praise for it at the moment... it's fantastic. But I'm only 10 hours in and this is a long game. So I can't offer a totally objective opinion of it yet. The game might go to crap before it's over, you never know until the credits roll.

I do love the first ten Final Fantasy games, but I am slowly coming to the realization that I may enjoy the Dragon Quest games more...
(I have beaten the first ten Final Fantasy games, and while they were great games, DQIII and DQIX are two of my very favorite RPGs.)

You were literally 5 minutes away from your first battle.Xeogred wrote:Did you manage much of VII? A decade or so back when I still traded in games... lol
I see Dragon Quest like mac & cheese. It's not fancy, it's just good and delicious and comfort food. Final Fantasy is trying out new restaurants from various cultures you haven't done before; it doesn't always turn out well but you're still bound to keep trying.

Yes, you took the words right out of my fingers. The Dragon Quest series is the ultimate JRPG comfort food in gaming. If you enjoy one of them, you'll likely enjoy them all, as the game design barely changes. But this is not a bad thing.MrPopo wrote:it's just good and delicious and comfort food
I would do humiliating things for DQVII 3DS in English.

I am going to start up Shining in the Darkness, a game I have had since I was a child, but never got anywhere thanks to a lack of map system. Would it be cheating to use a pre-made map versus making my own?

For a first person dungeon crawler where half the challenge is finding your own way through labyrinthine levels, yes it would be.BogusMeatFactory wrote:Would it be cheating to use a pre-made map versus making my own?

Still playing DQ VIII, still loving it. I really appreciate how it's the same classic DQ gameplay but with a modern presentation. Makes one wonder what a Final Fantasy done in this manner might feel like. Such as if FF never evolved beyond Final Fantasy VI, but still had the high production values of modern FF.
