The article goes from sad to hilarious when the author mentions that metal has historically avoided "social issues." Apparently grindcore never existed. Or metalcore. Or crossover thrash. Or metal in general. Good lord.
It's deathmetal.org

that place is absolutely ridiculous and always has been

basically a bunch of folks who are ashamed of being into metal so they have to paint it is as this grandiose "intellectual" artform so they can say "SEE! IT'S HIGH ART! REALLY!"

you can pretty much ignore everything they say lol

(they're also notorious trolls, fwiw)

and speaking of metal and social progress, might be worth pointing out that a trans woman fronted grindcore band just put out an album on Relapse and it's getting pretty rave reviews.

I'd been kinda looking forward to it for a while (for well, obvious reasons) and yeah

it's good. Lots of heavy Repulsion influence going on.

I think there was a trans metal musicians thread on the Metal Archives once. First heard about Cretin there. Solid band.

As for deathmetal.org, I know little about the site in general which is probably for the best. Looks like they have another #MetalGate article up.

I remember anus.com (seriously) was a metal review website + hub of terrible intellectual posturing back in the 90s. Shit, looks like the website still exists.

the ANUS folk and the deathmetal.org folk are the same people

also I could pull out a few more examples of good metal bands with trans musicans that I'm aware of.

Holy shit. I didn't think you meant this literally until I started browsing around. Makes sense. These guys concern themselves way too much with "hipsters."

Yeah throw some names out. That'd be cool.

some of my faves:

Winds of Genocide - death metal band with heavy crust/d-beat influence. They've got a new album coming out in January that so far sounds awesome.

Hekseri - fun black/thrash band.

+HIRS+ - queer powerviolence or something. They have really short songs, and by really short I mean that this 100 song compilation is only 38 minutes total.

Spitting Earth - another really awesome hardcore band

and a special mention, though it's not a band, is the Hymns to the Dead Goddess podcast, which is dedicated to showcasing women (explicitly including trans women) in extreme music. It's unfortunately defunct now it seems, but it's worth checking out the back episodes, 'cause there is good stuff. It's got its fair share of cheese, but it's a metal podcast so what do you expect?

I liked some Life of Agony back in the day. It's like some sort of NYHC / metal hybrid, I guess...... They had some releases back when Roadrunner didn't suck.

Thanks for the recs Apple.
