I don't know bone, I watched a longplay of Comix(like 5 minutes or so) and it looked like fun just probably a little tough. Some of the graphics though would be perfect for the retro rebirth we seem to be going through right now with a lot of indies and everything

I never really played the Shinobi games until recently, starting with Shadow Dancer, which I found lovely.

Now that I'm jumping into Revenge of Shinobi, I'm finding that game to be MUCH harder. Sure, you can take a lot more punishment than SD's one-hit kill, but in that, and with the limited moveset of SD, your options and route possibilities are made much more clear. I've come across several spots in Revenge where I just don't know how to avoid damage, probably because I'm not familiar with the expanded moveset of the game yet.

Still a great game though, of course, can't wait to dig into it a little more.

I actually just snagged a decent lot from someone on Sega-16, which consists of

Phantasy Star
Truxton
Castle of Illusion
Lightening Force
Rolling Thunder 2
Rolling Thunder 3

Very excited to get my hands on these. Truxton is the only one I have played much of before, and I didn't get enough of it when I last had it. Very excited to be able to start the Phantasy Star series properly, and always been curious about Rolling Thunder.

Shinobi 3 is super different compared to the other arcade like ones. I like it a lot more. Also has some of the best music on the Genesis.

Yeah, Revenge and 3 (Or, in Japan, Super and Super 2) are hugely different than the arcade-style games. Having started with the arcade ones, its taking some adjusting for sure.

Music is insane though, in both Revenge and 3 (Heck, and even Shadow Dancer isn't half bad)

I think my enjoyment of Shadow Dancer is what has me so excited for Rolling Thunder. Those games look more alike than Shinobi and Super Shinobi!

I think Shadow dancer is Shinobi lite. This is probably the easiest game in the series (I haven't played them all). That's why Shadow dancer makes a good introduction to the series. It's just a taste of Shinobi to get you hooked and coming back for more.

I think the first Shinobi is the easiest. It's so slow and deliberate.

Revenge of Shinobi is kicking my ass.

I can almost get through Shinobi III on Xbox 360. Don't have the Genesis cart unfortunately.

No idea why Revenge didn't make it to these newer compilations.

Phantasy Star 1 is brutal but amazing.

Do you need the first Rolling Thunder? There's a (Tengen) NES cart and the arcade version was ported to certain Namco comps - most notably Namco Museum 50th Anniversary and the Battle Collection. It's also on Namco Museum Virtual Arcade for Xbox 360, but I really wouldn't recommend that one.

I've been debating whether I want to start with the first, or just jump in with the second game. I like to keep things in order, but I'm on such a mad Genesis/MD kick right now, and I don't think it was ported to the Genesis? (Or SMS via PB Converter!)

Is it worth starting with the first game? I know very little of the series, trying to sort of keep it a mystery until I fire em up.

I have the first Shinobi game, but I don't have the SMS or Power Base converter, so I have never played it. I didn't let that stop me from enjoying the Genesis games. I see no particular need to play them in order.

Man I actually happened to have comix on the genesis collection(didn't know that was there) and man it is fun but I make it to that goop boss(I'm guessing mini boss actually) and get killed was doing good before that point though and was killed a few times. Seriously bone I don't know what you're talking about, comix is fun 8)

Honestly I'm not sure why I've never really played much of Revenge. Is that one that has a bunch of hilarious movie bosses like Godzilla?

What I love about 3 in comparison to the old ones though is the ability to run and double jump. The controls are just really awesome and it was my first one, so it's always been a bit hard to go back to old ones that are way slower control wise. I guess that makes them a bit comparable to Castlevania though which I can get over. I need to check those old Shinobi's out again sometime.
