thanks for the history brief . If I was Netflix CEO though, I would be worried. Torrents became the only means to watch shows/movies for many people and I think it will seriously hurt my investment. in 1989 you would be lucky if you got the show released on VHS. I remember something up until late 90's or early 2000's movies would be released 8 months later on VHS.

So you have serious time to wait if you are not going to the theater
Netflix has shown that people are willing to pay a low monthly fee to not be illegal. And with the crackdown on bandwidth usage by ISPs, it is even more likely people will use something that doesnt count against your cap or is in a more streamline form. Lets say I have a 100gig cap. If I download dvd images of tv shows (lets just say six episodes per), I am grabbing them at 4.7gigs. If I download avis of them, its 800megs ish. But if I stream them, it is aslow as 200 megs. Whcih one looks more appealing to you?

I think you got your dates mixed up on VHS though. That became a standard in the late 70s/early 80s. Few shows from the 80s are not on VHS.

A lot of shows would come out on VHS, but they'd be limited and not every episode of the series.

I'd argue that these days, most of what hasn't ever gotten some kind of home release were either unsuccessful series with short runs(though some of these have been released, like Police Squad! or Clerks: The Animated Series), one-off pilots that never went anywhere(Heil Honey I'm Home! or Lawless), specials/made-for-TV movie episodes of series(the variety of Walt Disney anthology shows like The Wonderful World of Disney), game shows(The Price is Right, Win Ben Stein's Money, etc.), or news casts and late night talk shows("Best of" compilations do get released, but not entire runs of things like Johnny Carson).

But come on, we live in a time when even Yor: Hunter from the Future gets a DVD release.

Yor's world, he's the man.

Hey now, I've never bought band aids and only have a box of them now as a never to be used symbol because they were purchased for me as a joke. I'll use some super glue if I have a cut on my fingertip or a joint that I keep reopening because of location, but otherwise I'll just rinse any dirt out of abrasions and let my body do it's thing.

Generally agree, as I think the ability to get full seasons of a show (much less full series) became a lot easier with DVD (and now Blu-ray).

That said, was it Time Life or similar that used to offer basically a subscription to VHS tapes of a show? I remember seeing ads for it. Would have cost a lot, but technically some shows may have been on VHS via specialty retailers.

For movies, the larger gap between theatrical release and consumer VHS sales back in the day probably was partly there to allow for other business models. 80s/early 90s would have had most movies get released first under rental pricing, and only later to consumer retail sale. I think Jurassic Park was the first major movie to not do that (maybe Disney movies?), and by the time DVDs were common it wasn't really done. Seems like the market has shifted a lot more to selling people the discs instead of catering to rental chains.

I seriously don't remember seeing tv shows on VHS. There was always limited edition or selected episodes. I never saw like a full series box set, for example Dr. Quinn 150 epsiode on VHS.

If you think about it, a VHS capacity is about 6hrs per tape. Lets assume 7 episodes per tape, thats 21 VHSs. I never saw that many.

Maybe they existed. The largest boxset I saw was Wrestlemania collection 1 to 13.

Here's a complete season set of Xena: Warrior Princess.

And here's what seems to be every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
I can't imagine the maniac who has enough free shelf-space for those Star Trek tapes...
