Anything that gets people discussing video games in an interesting way is fine with me, and I will be sure to include a link to this thread in the OP when I start a new one.
Inclusion on the internet!!?!?!?!

Like most everyone else here, I played very few games that were released this year. This year I spent a great deal of my expendable cash on PS1, Saturn, and cheap older PS3 titles. So here is my very short list:

Diablo III Reaper of Souls: When Diablo III was released, I enjoyed the heck out of it until I hit 60 but then I got tired of playing auction house simulator. Now that the auction house is gone and loot 2.0 is a thing, the game is much more palpable. The expansion improved things even further and I greatly enjoyed the new Crusader class. I haven't played much recently but I definitely see myself going back to it at some point in the future.

Child of Light: Another great looking game made possible by the UbiArt engine. It was a fun albeit short RPG adventure. The rhyming that they tried to do was the only thing that detracted from the experience in my opinion. My guess is that the original language was French and it did not translate well. Otherwise I enjoyed it immensely for the reasonable price of admission. The soundtrack was pretty stellar as well.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle: Sad to say that I haven't played this yet but I've heard good things. I picked up the physical version since it was an Amazon exclusive and I was worried that stock might be limited similar to what happened with Xenoblade (JoJo's is still in stock at Amazon btw).

If I had to pick a winner of those three, I guess I'd go with Reaper of Souls.

This is why I think this thread should have had two aspects. First being best 2014 game you played, with the second being best game you played this year for the first time regardless of release date. A lot of us have huge backlogs and it can be years or even decades before we get around to trying out a game we've owned for eons but hadn't started yet.

Best Game
Worst Game
Most Challenging Game
Most Fun Game
Prettiest Game

Are there any other categories that I shoudl include? (Once I get a few responses, I will start the thread.)
I'm waiting for this thread too. I've been keeping a little nerdy list of ten best/ten worst games all year.

The "but most of us don't play brand new releases" conversation seems to come up every year. I see no reason why you can't discuss what you played this year if it was new to you.

Limiting a thread to games that released only in this current year narrows the participants to like 12 regular users.

I think having a thread dedicated to just games from 2014 is a good way to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of a single year's releases.

I was thinking "I haven't played any games from 2014" but I just realized that's not entirely true!
I played Redux: Dark Matters for Dreamcast. So I guess that has to be my "game of the year?" It was a pretty terrible game with blurry graphics and a broken/IMO unbeatable final boss. But it has pretty good music at least.

Generally we seem to have two threads.

Best games of 2014
and
Best retro games played this year

Seems to work out fine.

The latter thread was started by BurningDoom last year who I don't see around much these days. Maybe someone else can start it this year?

The characters and setting are wonderfully realized; the mystery is intriguing; and the voice acting is superb. Unlike South Park: The Stick of Truth, the game handles its decidedly-adult content and themes gracefully, and it employs its fantasy setting to explore social justice issues in an intriguing manner. As a tremendous fan of both detective fiction, film noir, and well-designed, thought-provoking video games, I loved every moment of The Wolf Among Us, and I am anxiously awaiting a sequel.
I don't know why but I love this game I played what I could of this game on my phone(which by the way I think is a horrible place to play it, it really feels like for what little should be played with a controller that it would be better as a game on a actual device). I need to pick up the one of the other ports of it though :-\

I played it with a controller on the PS3, and I thought it would have been perfect for a touch screen.
