Nobody that I hang out with, other than you guys, play video games so I have been soloing everything thus far.
Since none of you are playing the PS3 version, what it's the best way to start or join a party?

You might want to sign up at Bungie.net if you already haven't. Always people on there in the forums looking to form strike/raid parties. And you can start your own clan and stuff.

...and I finished the story stuff pretty quickly. It sucks that they put the new strike behind a bunch of nonsense patrol bounties, but I suppose I will try to get to them later today or tomorrow.

If you get all four of those bounties, you can knock them off with one lap of the Cosmodrome, takes about 15 minutes. Then the strike unlocks.

Some users said they had to log off and on for it to work, worked fine for me.

Make sure you buy some of that vanguard gear Dave so you can get high enough to play the new Raid.

Yeah, I did the strike already now too. Still a stupid "wall" to the content.

What's the needed level for the raid? I figured I'd wait a few weeks first. I am at level 29 for now...do I need to buy vanguard gear and grind for a shit ton of shards, etc. just to get to 30+ now?

I have not had a crack at it but my understanding is 29 is the minimum you want to be and 30 is ideal for the moment.
