The Arcade Puzzlers thread

Post by Erik_Twice »

Arcade puzzlers don't get the same recognition amongst retro entushiasts platformers and shooting games but they also deserve some love! What are your favourites? Any games you are particularly great at? Fancy a challenge? Discuss it all here :D

I've been playing Magical Drop lately and can't make it past Strenght (Magical Drop II) or Tower (Magical Drop III). Half of the time I die to a ranked-up Hermit but I can trigger Moon on the latter game which also means I'll eventually trigger Black Pierrot (For better or worse, since he's impossible to beat).

MDII is a bit worse, though. The difficulty curve isn't as smooth (Strenght is a HUGE spoke) and for some reason it's far more likely to get an early game blowout than in MDIII. Its otherwise very similar and even uses the same animations but it's not as refined.

I also tried out Magical Drop V. It's one of the most dissapointing games I've played in a while. Avoid.

Some games puzzle games I want to check out:

- Puzzle Bubble: There are so many of them! What's the difference between each one?
- Klax: This is a very deep, very thoughtful game but I haven't dug into it yet.
- Landmaker: Seems totally unique, at pretty too! Should check it out.

Discuss :D

Battle Balls (AKA Senkyu) by Seibu Kaihatsu known for their shmups!

Nothing like getting a combo started there.

Aqua Rush (Japan only) by Namco

The goal is to get to the top of a high towering structure by creating ways to fill in the gaps to clear out everything ahead of you.

the Puzzle Bobble games are great, but I can't really break down differences from various editions, sorry. I'm a huge fan of the Puyo Puyo games though. I'd recommend those if you haven't delved in.

Columns on the Sega Genesis. Probably one of the more common puzzle games. This game had me going for months when it first came out. It's a lot like most stacking puzzle games except, somehow you were able to shift the colors a couple of times even after they had completely fallen but just before the next blocks were released. This allowed for extended game play even when you were almost certain the game would be over.

+1 for Aqua Rush, Battle Balls, and Cleopatra Fortune.

Avoid Landmaker - it is in the Wetrix / Musapay's Choco Marker category of trying to be too different and it just doesn't work.

Here are a couple games that I rave on:

Mushihimetama:

Kono E Tako:

Star Trigon (action puzzler):
