This is kind of where I am with Christmas music. There really isn't a lot of any kind of music that I'd want to listen to for a month straight once a year and while I certainly like to listen to old albums that I've owned for a long time, I don't feel compelled to do so in some kind of ritualistic fashion around a particular holiday. Maybe I'll listen to R.E.M.'s Green or Coltrane's A Love Supreme a few times this year, or maybe I won't. Maybe in a few years I will go on an R.E.M. kick for a few weeks and reminisce through their catalog like I haven't in years and years. Maybe I'll sprinkle some Coltrane into the rotation when I am in the mood for throwing a bunch of jazz CDs in the carousel on the stereo or on my phone. Most of the time when choosing music I just want to focus on new stuff or stuff that's new to me, stuff that I haven't heard for some time, stuff that is interesting to me at the time, etc.

Christmas music kind of fucks that vibe up and, for many years, was this kind of intrusion into the way that I typically listen to music. A few years ago I stopped playing Christmas music in the car, in the house, etc. all through December and, unless it was like Christmas Eve/Christmas Day or if I was putting up the tree, just played other kinds of music. It has been awesome, because I'd hate to die thinking that I spent essentially 1/12 of my music listening life hearing the same old songs (or an annual list of new ones) all about a holiday. There's just far too much else out there to hear, learn about, and come to appreciate to be wasting time with Christmas music for that long.

That said, I can give you some killer lists of Christmas music to play. I do like a lot of Christmas music and I feel like I have a good handle on both the popular and obscure tunes in the "genre"...but I just can't abide it for weeks on end anymore...

This time of year I pretty much turn off the radio and avoid going shopping. It's not that I hate Christmas music. I just hate that it starts the second Thanksgiving is over and wont go away until New Years. If it were for a single week in December, ya know, whatever then.

He makes a good point. Same music, every Christmas.
The thing is there is new music but do malls and retailers seek out and play some of the newer stuff to add in variety? Nope, just be glad you don't work in retail(at least i hope you don't....), I need to start remembering to charge up and bring my speaker with me to work(of course I wish there was something like the jbl clip that lasted longer than 5 hours and might fit in my pocket or clip like it does on my pants....). Heck this time of year I'm half tempted to make a mix of nothing but Mannheim, transiberian, and the hair metal Christmas album my dad has just to get me through it since even that is better than the trash we've been playing(sorry but I can't stand the 20 renditions of silver bells and soon it will be Christmas day)...

 -had to clock in late at work and would've gotten a whole heck a lot closer to done by 5 if it hadn't been for the stupid hour cuts

 - instead got told to stay late as well coming in a hour earlier than I was told to so that should be about 4.75 hours of overtime pay so kinda make my next paycheck a little more acceptable... Also a package from a certain member arrived so I now own devil survivor and mario super sluggers(so one wantlist item down and one nintendo game to start to complete my nintendo IP collection ^_^ )

 - my ps1 memory card has gone missing and right when I wanted to play lunar :| plus my ps1 has some messups where it works fine when walking around with one controller but I can't use the menus and the other controller it comes with works but even touching analog makes me have to unplug it and replug it in. Guess it might be time to open it up and see what's wrong with them...(already blew them out with compressed air....)

Your PS1 memcard going missing is a sign of something. I think you know what that is.

IMO, the most recent Christmas standard is Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You"...and that song was released 20 years ago. (It must be incredibly difficult to write a great Christmas song.)

That said, I do enjoy particularly awful covers of Christmas standards. Those amuse me every year. (I heard a particularly dreadful R&B cover of "Little Drummer Boy" this morning. It was mind-blowingly awful...and I loved it.)

Go for it.

I've played basically the same Christmas piano concert for twenty some years. But that...that's actually kind of fun because family joins in with the singing, and now I have taught my wife a few duets. And as we all know, I like to duet with my wife.

Still, same music. And I loathe Christmas music parodies. They are the worst. I can stomach "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" because it's older than I am and involves a drunken Grandmother who has been off her meds getting ran over by Kringle, but most Christmas music is dumb anyway, so no need to make it dumber by attempting to make it funny.

I'm a Jew on Christmas is one more exception.

Maybe I haven't been looking in the right places. Surely Sesame Street has put out some magical Christmas songs. And perhaps I should re-watch a Star Wars Christmas special for more inspiration. And, perhaps not.

Since we're talking Christmas...Fuck Christmas Pajamas and fuck the family who made that shit viral video about them.
