Even though i'm a collector i wouldn't mind owning cheapo versions that much if they just didn't look so god awful. The new essential line for PS3 games actually does look good and "best of selection for the Wii" isn't bad either but the rest look horrible. I especially hate the platinum lineup and i never buy platinum copy knowingly (few times a store has send me platinum copy instead of the original version)

Games are a lot different these days. A PS1 game, for example, I would always like to have the black version over greatest hits. For the PS3 tho, I've had to make a few exceptions. LBP1 Greatest Hits comes with extra content. Fallout 3 Greatest Hits has a lot of bug fixes. Et cetera.

I just wish they weren't so blatant on the PS3. Oh well.

I also hate, how with some games, there's a GOTY in a normal case, and a GOTY in a Greatest Hits case. I went out of my way to get the Dishonored GOTY in the normal case, but still got a Greatest hits at the counter. :(

Red Dead Redemption for me.

My main beef with million sellers is if it's so beloved making a greatest hits line should be more like criterion to celebrate that game and less like you're shaving as much money off as possible to get more people to buy it because its popular.

Well i wouldn't compare essentials to criterion releases because criterion re-releases old classics and that's why they put so much effort to their releases.

I'm pretty sure lot of PS3/XBOX 360 will be remade someday and then we get what would be equivalent of criterion release.

Though it would be neat if essentials/classics etc would have something extra like a poster or something.

I don't mind Platinum at all, but I do have an irrational dislike of the Essentials packaging [to the extent that I don't have a single one]

I'm not as picky as most people I know, but I do like my spines to look the same.

However? There's The Cover Project to fix that problem. Print out a new cover, slip it right over the old one, BAM you're good. I would never throw out the original inserts, but holy crap some of that stuff... my biggest pet peeve isn't GH/etc, it's actually the 1st-gen "Spiderman" style PS3 spines. Gotta reprint those to be the regular-spine ones (I hear they actually made a 3rd style for the final few releases, but I don't have any of those yet)
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed

The same thing happened to me yesterday. I was so happy to find a pristine, "black label" Dishonored: GOTY case at a local Gamestop, but the only disc behind the counter was the "red" greatest hits copy. :?

Just wait until years later when the PS3 and XBL servers shut down and you can no longer DL patches, people will be stuck with nearly unplayable black label Skyrims and Fallout New Vegas's, but hey they look nicer on the shelf.

Not to mention most of the GOTY/Greatest versions have all the DLC on the disc, but hey if you want to pay more for less more power to ya.
