Popped along and had my wallet pilfered (Odeon now stick an extra quid on "blockbuster" releases the grasping twats) to watch the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

It's pretty decent. It's not quite as redunant as other Part 1 movies like Harry Potter 7A and doesn't end as abruptly as shit like Desolation of Smaug or The Golden Compass. It is however still padded and features minimal amounts of action. There are scenes that repeat for no reason and some that last longer than they should. It's clear the editor had to reign in their training and bump this thing up to "official franchise movie length!".

That said I still think on the whole though the Hunger Games movies are a cut above other tween dreck and deal with issues beyond teen love and angst in a compelling way. The support cast is very good as usual and it's surprisingly bleak material. It won't however change your mind on the series if you're not into it.

I guess but I think that's a really reductive way of looking at it.

I kind of see it like that Stephen King quote comparing Harry Potter to Twilight. "Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend".

Luc Besson's return to form. The whole premise is flawed of course, and the whole last segment as an audiovisual vista could have been toned down a bit, but with Johansson's performance and some suspension of disbelief it works.

It's no Léon, but it's his best work this century.

I have only a faint idea of consciousness having read a few books, but what makes us smarter than the other mammals is the complexity of our neural connections and the density of said neurons. The ten percent fallacy in this movie could have been easily avoided, but I guess that's mainstream cinema for you

I have that on dvd, and it's Princess Mononoke. One of the big reasons that movie is incredible is because it's a Hayao Miyazaki movie(or studio ghibli if you so perfer but it is written and directed by miyazaki). I think he's made out to be the disney of Japan(and his filmography is amazing, still need to see quite a few of those though :-\ ). I don't know why but it seems like a lot of the movies he's involved in turn into masterpieces especially that one. I need to find or buy a copy of kiki's delievery service that movie was amazing when I was younger and I'm hoping it isn't nostalgia telling me it was good.

Mononoke (type of spirit in Japanese lore). It was one of the first anime I watched in college, when I started watching more of it in general, so I hold it in high regard.

You may want to check out Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind if you haven't seen it. Pre-Ghibli Miyazaki, but from his body of work, probably one of the most similar.
