Essential hits/Platinum etc. vs original versions
I saw the release of Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD remix today and I went online to look for the 1.5 HD remix which I never got. I found most places sell the "essentials" version of it and i'm wondering...
Do you guys reject released versions of this kind and hunt down the original release or it doesn't matter to you ?

Generally speaking, people tend to gravitate toward the original releases. Most like their collections to look uniform.
The biggest exception to this is if there's additional content. They might also be purposely collecting all copies of a certain game. Or they could be collecting the different labeled games as a specific subset.

In my experience, looking at the data, they're minor/major bug fixes (or exactly the same sometimes), and have a different colored jacket. I equate them to ROM PRG0 -> PRG1 releases. As far as gameplay goes, they're the definitive final version. I just assume they're the better version when I'm buying discs. They usually cost less and play just fine on my consoles.
My only qualm is that when bought used, they do tend to have more scratches and fingerprints than the original release would normally have from regular usage.

It a matter of preference from collector to collector. In my case i just want the game to be in good condition and complete, of course if the essential hits has more content then i'll get that.
Also the PS3 is the worst console if you want consistency on your game cases
I can see how it will be a nightmare for those who love to see everything equal on their shelves.

Re: Essential hits/Platinum etc. vs original versions
Often times for me it comes down to the fact that the GH versions often just look ugly. The PS1 GHs are look atrocious, but the Xbox 360 I don't mind (other than the plain font on the spine of the game).
I think the other big thing is that getting a non-GH version is kind of like getting a first edition for a lot of people. A GH version is basically a re-release of the original. Obviously the added content the last couple generations changes this for the better though. I'm not huge into DLC so personally I don't care much.

This is exactly why I will always choose the reprint over the original. It is often that greatest hits/goty/platinum versions of a game have an updated codebase with bug fixes and even frame rate improvements. It's not always the case, but it's often enough to matter more than the original jacket art does.Anapan wrote:In my experience, looking at the data, they're minor/major bug fixes

It really doesn't matter to me as I only actively collect for the Saturn and Game Gear which have no "greatest hits" type releases. If I want to play a game on another system I look for any way to save as much as possible. I am very OCD about my Saturn and Game Gear games though lol.
I am buying all Saturn games, PM me with your offerings and I will let you know if I need the game or not! (Everything must be CIB)
Currently trying to knock off all the sports games, would like to get them <$5 each! Of course if you would like to donate them I will gladly pay the shipping!

PSX is the only time I get a little picky about this. The black labels look so much better than the green.
PS3 on the other hand, I actually kind of like the red cases that some of the greatest hits releases come in.
I don't worry too much about it nowadays. Either way you cut it, it's virtually impossible to have consistently colored/styled items on a shelf anyways.
