I think a Sam us quilt from the opening of the gameplay from Metroid would be really slick. Just by looking at it you could hear the opening music.

I smell like acqua di gorgovivo, and I don't wear cologne. I have a condition.

For Key, a response from my Mother:

Hi hon,

Well I'd like to say whoa to all the accolades before they get out of control, but they already are out of control.
I love you enough to want to make a state fair quality quilt for you, but in all honesty this one is not :-(

To be honest I'd rate it family quality--even close family quality ;-). I don't know if you noticed but the quilt center is, I think, 2 inch squares that I quilted to look like one inch squares. The challenge/hurdle encountered was that when you work with solid colors, much to my amazement if you are even 1/8" or less off it glares out as a mistake. Hence another reason for the one inch quilting--it was my hope to distract from the numerous sewing flaws.

I tried various borders around the main square--it took quite a while to come up with something that enlivened the quilt and brought some movement to it. The bright green helped along with the arrows to bring some movement into the quilt--I studied some Amish quilts to see what they did for inspiration. It's strange, but to me if I didn't bring some movement into the quilt it was just so completely flat and, well...lifeless. And we all know Luigi is full of life and I wanted the quilt to be happy and cheerful.
I'm glad you like it, and thank goodness you don't have a king sized bed because it probably would have about killed me!

What do I think about pixelated designs? Whoever does it has GOT to be using some kind of computer program. Either that or 1) they are a major glutton for punishment or 2)have the patience of Job and then some. Pixelated quilt designs require patience, because you have to wait for the pieces to be sewn together before you can step back and see what you've done. No sneak peaks before you've finished.

I have got to say that I learned more about quilting from this quilt than any other I've done.
Enjoy!
Mom

I love this.

That's a really interesting insight! And very true. Quilting is such a beast; I'm impressed by anyone who even attempts it, much less is very skilled at it. At least if you're cross stitching, the sizes of the "squares" are set by your canvas, and the product is generally small enough to fully take in the design with your eye as you go (unless you're doing something insanely huge). Mistakes are still made, and sometimes you don't realize particular color shades don't work as well together as you'd thought until you're almost done... but that's nothing compared to the headache of a quilting issue.

Thanks for being the conversational middleman, Luke!

EDIT: I wish your mom weren't so disappointed with the result, though. I just looked over the pictures again, and I was struck all over again by how sharp and clean it looks. The arrows remind me of the coins that were sometimes arranged in that shape in underground areas, and the multicolored layer makes me think of TV snow and/or pixel glitches. The whole thing just works. And do I have to mention again that it's hand-stitched?! She's earned herself the luxury of some confident pride, no question about it.
