Don't you think this is a downside of the Wii U? Currently Wii U has 3 controllers, each is good for a certain type of games. The tablet, the pro controller, and the wiimote. Not sure if the nunchuck is used on any.

What if the just used the pro controller as the main one.
I don't think that's a downside at all. Most games work with all three controllers and so you aren't really forced to buy any others. Instead, like PC, you're given a variety of options as to how you want to play. I like that.

The original Wii had many controller options as well. Wiimote, nunchuck, Classic Controller (Pro) and Gamecube controllers.

And then there was the <insert controller here> to wii adapters that people made that seemed to make it possible for any controller you really wanted to work

I think that would get down to a Nintendo budget crew, and a Nintendo philosophy debate. :) They capped the system where they did in price and it stopped them from going stronger due to the tablet. If their philosophy of being a disruptor to win the money were put into reality check mode and stopped, given the only controller was the pro controller, odds are they'd be in the lead or in a damn good horse race right now on the merit at $350 they'd have put a system out very close in power to the other two guys and would have appeased third parties and had those games they denied themselves.

TO that one post sure the Wii had it, the nunchuk, the gc pad, and classic controller(pro) but it was also a $200 system in a $400-600 market. At some point your price bottoms out so low you're the budget box so you get sales due to that alone. Perhaps if the WiiU were a $200 system they'd be rocking far nicer sales and things would turn a corner.

Since my wife and I are terrible at hiding Christmas gifts from each other I found out that she got me Mario Kart 8. Not a huge fan of the series, but I've heard good things about this one.

outside of the lack of Battle mode, the game is honestly the best driving of any of the Mario Karts. The tracks are great and it really is a lot of fun!

I'm not the biggest MK fan either. I really like the SNES/GBA games and I thought 7 was alright but 8 is just a stellar game by any definition.

^ - This. It has a stunning level of content. It totally renewed my love of the series after the disappointment I had with Mario Kart Wii and 7.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I am so glad to see someone else say that. Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7 are so widely praised and yet such uninspired games.

Mario Kart 8 would have been hard to knock on any level if it weren't for the giant flub on the battle mode.
