So, what's the deal with Vicodin?

OK, so I know Vicodin is one of many drugs (pain killer/opiates) that people supposedly like to take recreationally, but I don't get it. I'm taking some for pain right now (had surgery yesterday) and it really isn't making me high or anything. I'm not taking super doses or anything, but it's not nearly as potent an opiod as Demerol or anything. Hell, the amount of acetaminophen in it you'd put your liver 6 feet under long before you got a meaningful high.

Am I just missing something here? Maybe demand for Vicodin isn't as high as I've assumed...

Vicodin is a synthetic opiate and it is in relatively low concentration. The reason you can't get high off vicodin is it has a large amount of tylenol in addition to the hydrocodone (active ingredient). you can take 2 safely for pain, but that wont be enough to "get you high", but it is enough to get your brain addicted. alot of people have real problems when they abuse it, because they get tylenol poisoning. its the potential for abuse that vicodin is a controlled substance. and in the hands of a few, you can extract the hydrocodone for a more pure opiate, which would certainly provide the delerious and halluciogenic effects associated with other opioids.

The extraction is pretty easy. Hydrocodone is highly soluble in water, acetaminophen is not. So dissolve the pills in a minimal volume of warm H2O (some binders won't dissolve), then chill (acetaminophen precipitates), and filter (remove the binders and APAP).

There's also reason to believe that supplementing with something like SAMe that replenishes reducing equivalents in the liver will help avoid liver toxicity.

Note that I don't recommend doing this. I've seen too many people fuck up their heads with opiates. EVERYONE who plays with them ends up going through periods of tolerance and withdrawal.(Which doesn't imply a life altering addiction, but it is enough to keep me away) If you do decide to play with them, remember that you are not special, and willpower means nothing. The drug is more powerful than you.

A) you're hurt, so you don't feel the high as much... most prescription drug abuse has to do with taking it when you don't need it.

B) low dose opiate addiction is a combination of not feeling and the addictiveness of it. Consider so many addictive drugs, like cocaine. I shoot a line and I feel ill and sick and my head tickles. I hate the high and feel awful about it. Yet with in 15 to 30 minutes when I'm coming down and my palms start sweating I NEED another line just because if I don't I want to kill myself... hence why avoid that drug like the plague.

C) And despite what people say you SHOULDN'T drink with it. Drinking with it is the common way to enhance the high. My friends and I usually mowed down on that garbage when eating acid and drinking beer to keep us inside all night. With out it we'd end up traveling the town into the wee hours acting retarded. That and it cut down the jitters from dirty acid.

Vicodin doesn't really produce a high so much as take away pain. You initially start with the perscription for legit pain, but if you take it too long (or have the addictive gene) then you develope the dependence on it. Now you keep taking it to avoid the pain of withdrawel.

The interesting thing about Vicodin addicts is that their livers build up an immunity. The hardcore pill poppers will end up taking hundres of Vicodin a day with little adverse affect to their liver. You give that much to a healthy person and they'll die on you.

It depends on the streangth of them. since they are mostly tylonol, it doesnt do too much if you swallow them, but if you snort a couple youll catch a buzz.


I don't encourage this, the high your going to get isn't going to be worth the burning nostrils and vicodin flavored drip youll have in the back of your throat.

Not to mention snorting pills is pretty freaking stupid in the first place, highly addictive, expensive...snorting vikes can turn into oxycottins very quickly, and those go for 80 bucks a pill on the street, in some places more.
