The quilt is pretty awesome; now Luigi can hug you when you're cold at night.

Awesome! That looks like the kind of thing that will be handed down from generation to generation! Also, going into this thread I misread quilt as quiz for some reason.

cool quilt is cool

Wife pulled out the Veto Card. Luigi Quilt is going into a closet for now.
Sad face and stuff, as I'm all out of counter-veto cards, so she wins this one for 2014. Luckily, 2015 is right around the corner.

Also, counter-veto cards are actually real? I gotta find some of those.

Can she knit mine too? Those bloody things are expensive.Luke wrote:She even makes my boxer shorts.
Props for putting Luigi in the spotlight though. 10/10 would sleep under.

Oh man, Luke, that thing is amazing. Hand-stitched?! Your mother is a powerhouse. I especially love that she went all-in and made up the green background of pixel squares too. She could have easily appliquéd Luigi on top of a large, solid green piece. Continuing the whole design with squares is such a cool nod toward technology. Your mom approached the quilt as if it were an actual screen, populated with individual pixels. I love that kind of accuracy. It also boggles the mind to imagine all the extra work that had to go into it because of that style choice!
What were some of the issues she had along the way? I'm really curious. And does she have a new perspective on pixelated graphics? You've mentioned she does cross stitch, and with the quilting too she obviously has an appreciation for square-based pictures. But does she feel any differently about what goes into designing video game sprites, or anything like that? Did she enjoy connecting the two mediums and seeing how many considerations they have in common?
This is one of my favorite things, seeing pixel artwork rendered in traditional crafting formats. Seriously, your mom's unbelievable.
EDIT: Looking at the pictures, I can't actually tell if the background is all individual pieces like the checkerboard-ish border, or if it's stylized stitching on top. Either way, it's fantastic, because it conveys the pixels perfectly.

You provide the cloth and dimensions, and I'm sure she would.BRIK wrote: Can she knit mine too? Those bloody things are expensive.

My Mother had several issues along the way. First and foremost, creating a design was a headache for her. She actually had several quilts "made" before scrapping them and starting over. In her own words "The quilt kept feeling stale. It needed some movement, so I added arrows". Mom also tried some shortcuts that didn't work, so she went back to hand stitching. She mentioned trying basting some of the patterns on, which didn't work.
"Ya take a short cut, and ya get shoddy work".
Mom has made a lot of Amish style 3-D quilts, but this was her first pixelated quilt. And from the tone of her voice, maybe her last. I jokingly asked her "Now where's the matching Mario quilt?" and her response was "Not for a thousand dollars" (but how cool would that be?).
I'll pass your comments and questions to my Mom.
edit* Anyone else remember the Dr. Who scarf my Mom knitted? That thing was also pretty bad ass.
