Saturn model 1 video issues

Post by tpunk »

Hi guys, I'm having some odd problems with a Saturn I just purchased. I have it running via scart to an hdmi scaler out to my Vizio 37" LCD TV. I'm fairly certain I have it in game mode. The problem is the scaler doesn't ever output video. It is getting signal though becuase it's not outputing the no signal message. It keeps cycling between NTSC and PAL though. Audio comes through fine (it goes out when the scaler is switching between NTSC and PAL). I tried to play an audio CD and it works just fine. I'm waiting on my first game to show up still, so can't test if that works yet. I just ordered a new scart cable that has pure sync that I'm hoping may give a better chance than my current cable. I've also tried the pulling and reinstalling the battery with no change. Any other ideas to look into on the inside of the unit?

What signals does the scaler accept? Saturns can output anywhere from 320×224 to 704×480.

I'm not sure. I know that my Genesis and Dreamcast work fine with it though. This is the scaler that I purchased

I think it's a fairly popular option on the cheaper side so maybe someone has experience with it.

Try using the Saturn without the scaler, just direct into the TV. If it works without issues, that'll at least rule out the Saturn as the problem.

I'll run up to the local retro gaming store and see if they have a cable they will try for me tomorrow. I would, but only have scart and no TV's with scart input.

Ok, I'm leaning towards it being the cable or the AV connector. I saw the video come up on the screen for a few seconds and then went away. This was after fiddling with the connection a bit. If it is the AV connector do you have any suggestions to look at to fix it? I've tried blowing a can of compressed air in it to clean out any debris but that did not seem to change anything. I'll post up once I try a new AV cable as well.

This is exactly what my setup is doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIoPi5f9lF4

I'm still waiting on the new scart cable, and the local shop didn't have any saturn AV cables for me to try.

Sounds like a loose wire in the cable. Other than massaging the cable until the picture is constant there's not much you can do other than get a new cable.

And you are correct. My new csync scart cable showed up today and it works flawlessly. I appreciate all the help.

Have you tried any other 80s/early 90s consoles through the same cable and scaler? Maybe it doesn't play well with an older half sized progressive versus full sized interlaced signal, or I think I remember in NTSC land, some things weren't happy with the 59.97 hz signal that something produced versus actual 60 hz. That video wasn't long enough to tell, if you leave yours going, is it a fairly regular cycle when the picture appears, like every 15ish seconds?
