Heather's one of the better female protagonists in gaming in general.

*nods* Pretty much agree with you on everything there Ack, guess I still just prefer some others over it. Gameplay wise and art direction (enemy designs) were pretty much perfected at that point though. I was really weary about the cult stuff being expanded upon since nutty religious stuff in horror is never really that interesting to me, but was very surprised at how cool that stuff ended up being in the later bits. Maybe that's one weakness for the first game, some of that stuff was bleeding cliche' cheese to me and I started to hate how it tried to explain things because OH crazy religion/fantasy. Dahlia is probably my least favorite character too, she didn't bother me as much in SH3 though. So, SH3 developing the cult/God stuff further brought back the cool weirdness perhaps.

I definitely prefer SH1/SH3's otherworld over SH2's. Probably SH4's crazy world in general too (the building and apartment worlds were very otherworld-ish in general). SH2 was such a finely crafted and dense experience though, so it's heavy stuff. On the other hand, I feel like SH3 is probably the most approachable for replays, and SH2 is probably one of those games I really have to be in the mood for. I've been set on going with SH3 whenever I'm in the mood to replay one again, I probably have some unlockables too so that'll be fun.

Heather was awesome, I agree with you guys. Maybe a second time around I will appreciate the dark humor a bit more.
My biggest complaint was probably how Heather just kept dying and it ruined the tension a little. But it did a good job of making your deaths feel like it was just repeating some cycle and that's just how it goes for her, she keeps dying in her crazy world. At least that's kind of how I saw it?
My only legit complaint about SH3 is that it felt very short compared to the other main ones, almost in a rushed kind of way. It really felt like it needed at least another main area or two.

Yeah, I used to speed run SH3. My best time got down to an hour and a half or so.

For humor, a lot of it is tied to unlockables and secrets: the silencer, the gold and silver pipes, the flamethrower advertisement, the Heather Beam and Sexy Beam, the horde of unlockable t-shirts, etc. There are also references to Metal Gear Solid, the other Silent Hill games, and more. The game gets pretty ridiculous. Add in areas like the amusement park with its haunted house...yeah.

As far as Heather dying, I think it fits the theme of rebirth and her battling with her purpose. Ultimately she has to change, her old self has to be killed off completely for her to move on with her life. The enemies in SH3 aren't as thematically interesting as SH2 unfortunately, but the game gets a lot right. And at least Heather understands how to weild a metal pipe.

Oh, I understand it. My timing in the game is terrible.

So my wife tells me I can spend up to 50.00 on eBay for Christmas. Now there are a couple games I want and I'm not sure what to pick maybe some suggestions.
Sega genesis:
Mutant league hockey
Splatter house 3
Battletoads/double dragon
Rolling thunder 3
Grind stormer(if I find it for 50.00)
Nes:
Mega man 3
Castlevania series 1-3
Super c
I'm leaning towards the genesis games. But not sure what to get.

Splatterhouse 3 is awesome. It's one of the best beat 'em ups I've ever played. Branching mission structures and alternate endings are good for replays. It's also the darkest and most disturbing Genesis game I can think of.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Like I said a few posts back, I'm a Resident Evil virgin.

I'm currently playing RE4. It's funny because I bought the Wii Edition when it first came out and hated it, I always had a hard time with third person shooters. I paid $50 for it, played it for about 5 minutes and decided I didn't like it. I just hated how you control movement. I traded the game in when it was still worth something. I just bought it again for $15 new, so at least I didn't really lose any money.

Since I got rid of RE4, I played through the first three Metal Gear Solid games. Again, third person shooters. Also, I was never able to play a stealth game. I just didn't have the patience when I was younger. I just find it funny how your tastes can change. I never thought I like a MGS game, but I ended up REALLY enjoying MGS3. So recently I was thinking I should really give RE4 another shot. Back in 2007 I disliked the game so much that I got rid of it. Now, some years later, I'm playing through it and enjoying it.

No worries. Did you give REmake a shot, or just go straight to RE4?

For some reason, I could never get into Metal Gear Solid 3. I liked the first MGS, and I managed to get through the second despite its flaws, but MGS3 never clicked. I have been meaning to give it another shot some day, but I have pretty much sat on it for a decade now thinking that. Oh well.
