I was watching a trailer sometime in the past year (Sonic Boom? no idea) and the whole time I just kept thinking "Why is Sonic talking.....please Sonic, stop talking"

I'm fine with a smirk and a "Hmph!" here and there but I hate Sonic as a character every time he utters a sentence, and I loved Sonic in his heyday.
Yes, I absolutely hate his post Mega Drive design

The orginal Sonic has an iconic design. Simple yet memorable. He is a cartoon character, chubby but with charm. Modern Sonic is an anime character. Lacking in character and trying to make up for it with gimmicks, like the green eyes....why does Sonic need green eyes? Why did he need a skinnier body? Does he look cooler? No. I mean his long limbs are just distracting, not to mention they make his running animation look bad.

And yeah, not even going to touch the plot on Sonic games.

I actually prefer Sonic's new design because it just doesn't make sense that the old one would be fat if he runs all the time. Or maybe because that's just what I grew up with.
Sonic games are about the only video games where I don't skip cutscenes. I just love them because they're so stupid. Everything: voice acting, animation, writing. It's all so hilariously dumb that I can't help but laugh the whole way through.

Sonic Colors on Wii is the best Sonic game I've played since Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It is an absolute blast to play and full of imagination and verve. Can't recommend it enough, and dat OST.

Sonic Colors on DS is -OK- but is nowhere near as great as the Wii version.

My own perspective on some of the most recent Sonic games.

Sonic 2006. I got it in November 06, (originally, the reason why I got the X360) and, my God, it was awful. Basically the game is glitched and has very long loading times (not even PS1/SAT games had those loading times). As per the plot, don't get me started...

Sonic and the secret rings. Just unplayable. I understand Sega was experimenting with the motion controllers but they should have included a regular controller option.

Sonic and the Black Knight. Another Wii sword game. A meh kinda game. If you wanna end up with a sore arm, go ahead.

Sonic Unleashed. I got the X360 version. I like you can pick the japanese language with subtitles. It's like having two games in one. The hedgehog stages are nicely executed, the werehog stages make you think, the button mashing can be relaxing. Give it a shot, although not on the priority list.

Sonic Colors. This is a highly underrated game (maybe because of its name and because it was a Wii exclusive). It is a shame they didn't make it for the HD consoles. Great gameplay, well inspired stages, great atmosphere overall, multiple control choices.

Sonic Generations. Just go get it.

Sonic Lost World. It's ok. Feels a bit awkward to control but you get used to it. Regarding perspective and cameras, somehow it is what Sonic X-Treme may have been. Not bad, considering the anemic selection on the Wii U, this is one to get for the system (after you got Smash, Mario 3D, Mario Kart, the Wind Waker remake, etc).

I don't know if it's been posted, but you can play Sonic Unleashed's "normal" levels using a Generations mod. Applies to the PC version only.

My assessment on the only three you really need to get:

Sonic Colors - Good, but a bit too much emphasis on the 2D sections for me, with some frustrating gameplay due to bottomless pits and the usual stuff that people criticise Sonic for.

Sonic Generations - As good as it gets with modern Sonic. Go buy!

Sonic Lost World - Incredibly underrated. Some of the best music and gameplay/level designs in a Sonic game since the Genesis days. It just also features some absolutely terrible levels. Most criticism is leveled at the controls and "lack of speed" neither of which I find too much of an issue once you get into the game.

OK, it seems to be agreed. Colors and Generations are as good as current Sonic games are gonna get. Lost World is viewed as good by most, but not as good as Colors and Generations. (Some people's opinions differ, but that seems to be what most people are saying).

As I've said, I bought Black Knight thinking it was another Sonic game I read about. I'll probably try it at some point, but I'm kinda put off by all the stuff I've read about it. At least I didn't pay much for it (<$10).

I own colors, but haven't played it yet. I've also been wanting to pick up Generation and Lost World since they came out. I guess I'm just not willing to pay much for either since I've been let down Sonic game after Sonic game. :P

After reading everything in this thread, as well as some other random stuff on the Web, Unleashed doesn't sound horrible. If I can find it cheap enough, I might give that one a shot too (but only after I've tried Colors, Generations and Lost World).

Re Unleashed: I've played the Wii version and it's not terrible. Of what I have played (which, admittedly, isn't too much) the Sonic levels were, for the most part (from my memory), pretty good. The hub world (replaced with text in the Wii version) is pointless and crap though. And the Werewolf levels are terrible. It might be worth picking up for the Sonic levels.
