More Link to the Past Help...

Post by Anayo »

I've just beaten the Wizard and entered the dark world.

Sashrahala or whatever his name is has told me I need to go to "the castle of darkness" (or something to that effect). In any case it was pretty obviously marked on my map with a big fat "#1".

Well, after trudging through a maze of thorny bushes, I've managed to reach the entrance... except that it won't open. I don't really know what to do. Does anyone remember this part?

Pay the monkey 20 rupees and he will open the entrance! You find him in the mini-maze thing you go through when you are getting to the first dark world palace. Have you thought about looking at a walkthrough on gamefaq btw?

AH, ok. The monkey makes sense. I gave him ten rupees early on, but then he got scared away when I battled a monster so I thought he was just a random distraction. I guess not!

Yes, I looked at gamefaqs, but the reviews were for folks looking to obtain every item under the sun and every nook and cranny of everything. It involved a lot of wading to get to the parts that were relevant to me. It's not lame to post for help here instead of finding it on my own, is it? :?

Yeah, I'm not certain if the monkey runs away due to combat or if it's just because you can cause him to unlink from you using the Pegasus boots. Regardless, whenever something's following you it's usually a bad idea to use the boots.

Not at all. What's lame is that it took you almost two decades to jump on the LttP bandwagon. :P

Hopefully, all the praise you've heard from us (and everyone else) hasn't overhyped the game to the point where it can't possibly meet expectations.

Lol, well let's see if I can give my impressions...

Bad stuff: the presentation isn't as "movie like" as the 3D Zeldas, which were the ones I started out on. It's a bit of a time consuming game too, so I gotta motivate myself to play.

Good stuff: It's a pleasant and well-constructed game. It's fun when I know what to do next and then follow through with it. I like getting new items and getting more powerful.

So... all in all I think I like Chrono Trigger more, but it's still neat. I'm going to try to finish it.

Sorry to double post, I just had to add this...

I beat the first dungeon literally minutes ago, and man, was it an ORDEAL. It took me like 8 tries to beat that scorpion thing. By the time I finally beat him I had honed my technique so well that I beat him in under a minute, attacking relentlessly. I usually prefer games that are a little easier in terms of difficulty, but I've got to admit it gave me a real sense of accomplishment to finally get past that part.

Oh yeah, I should have also added on the "good impressions" above that this game has really good music. It showcases the SNES's musical power.

So the Helmasaur King (first boss of dark world) is one of the hardest bosses in the game, especially equipped as you are when you fight him. So take heart.
