Pulsar_t wrote:Some film aficionados here might have missed the sad news that Ken Takakura is no longer with us. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/ar ... ge-83.html I don't like reading celeb gossip at all but in case an exception can be made. Black Rain was an awesome film but it isn't my Takakura's favourite by far.
Yeah, he was also in The Yakuza opposite Robert Mitchum and one of the leads in the 1994 version of 47 Ronin, which is an excellent version of Chushingura.
His most memorable role for me was as a sympathetic everyday senior in Railroad Man, a drama filled with sadness but life ultimately reaffirms itself with all its ups and downs.
Saw Interstellar yesterday and liked it quite a bit. I've always liked Chris Nolan movies but have also been hesitant to list him alongside true greats like Kubrick or Hitchcock. However I appreciate how, like with Inception, he has enough clout to get blockbusters like this made, ones that don't totally patronise their audience.
I'm sure people will rip on the plotholes and what not as is the current mode du jour, but they didn't take me out of the film. I also thought the film was quite effective emotionally even if the whole "love transcending time and space" angle was a bit off or at least off coming from the characters it does. McConaughey gives a very strong lead performance and there are some visuals elements, the robots Tars and Case especially, which are incredible. It loses some traction towards the end however when Nolan does a totally unneeded Nolanesque twist and some of the subplots are weak.
I also watched Battle: Los Angeles which was pretty dumb but passable. Sort of like Fast and Furious crossed with Independence Day. Sort of.
I'm usually a cynic but HOLY COW Guardians of the Galaxy is the best comic adaptation in yonks! Granted even with its self-aware silly moments the plot had some holes and inconsistencies but it's Marvel after all

I like to think of Battle: Los Angeles as "First Person Shooter: The Movie!"

Heck yes. Guardians has replaced Avengers as my favorite Marvel movie. Truly fantastic.
Has everyone seen the Avengers Infinity War 1&2 trailer yet?
