I think that since the new consoles use multicore processors (8 each, I think?) that we'll see a lot more ports like this programmed in such a way as to accommodate for that architecture. i3s are 4.5 years old now, so them getting pushed out by newer releases shouldn't be that shocking...
well yes, of course. I initially built this rig on a budget, and the path to upgrades was always in my thoughts. I'm just surprised to see a 4 core requirement all the sudden. I mean, a CPU upgrade was actually on my list in the somewhat future, but until TODAY I had no reason to think it would be a more immediate upgrade.

For instance, like I said, mine is Tier 2 on TH list... and they recommend that it's not worth the $ to up your CPU unless you're jumping 3 tiers. But this kind of changes things.

If you had 4 cores 7 years ago, what did you do w/ that CPU? I'd assume it was really expensive 7 years ago?

I had an Intel Core2 Quad Q6600. I bought it following this: http://www.dailytech.com/Intel+Price+Cu ... le8073.htm - for about $300. It and a decent video card from the same era basically ran everything I threw at it at a decent clip until this generation of new consoles launched late last year and PC games strated scaling up accordingly.

right so see in this example, your CPU was in the 5th tier, and mine was 2nd. So mine was considered "better" for gaming, at a time when games didn't demand more than 2 cores. (IE: 2 of yours weren't being used - so the actual CPU itself was better for gaming on mine).

Yup, I get that.

I also bet MGS:GZ will run fine on your i3. Would be interesting to test it...

Quad cores have usually occupied the "recommended" system requirement slot for a while now. I don't think MGSV is the first to require one at a minimum either. I'd say it's been a long time coming, and still will take a little while to see really become standard.

There are plenty of current-model CPUs that are dual core, including the i3 line. Almost all Intel laptop CPUs are as well, including the i5s and a good chunk of i7s (at least in terms of physical cores).

The per-core performance is still a lot stronger than what's in the current consoles, as what they've got is basically similar to Atom chips.

TBH, I had the same exact thought. I've had (knocks wood) no issues whatsoever running anything that seemed CPU-related yet. I think there's a good chance it would be fine. Let's start a Kickstarter to buy me the game and test it for the benefit of the forums?

yeah I'm sure it's not the First to require... but first I've noticed. So was kind of a shocker. But I agree it'll take a while to become the actual standard.

System requirements have always been steep for that series. The original game requires an MSX2.

If anything, this latest conversation led me to that hierarchy chart over at TA.

The new desktop I got this year has the i5-4430 (quad core) -- look at that, right at the top! I've already run some less than 10-year games on it and it's a champ.

I think an i3 might be able to handle that MGS game.
