The SNES versions of the Breath of Fire games are nice but do yourself a favor and buy the GBA ports. They are better than the originals in almost every way. The translations has been tweaked to fix grammatical errors, difficulty has been balanced, there is less grinding needed in the GBA version as enemies give nearly 3 times the amount of EXP and gold compared to the SNES version, there also seems to be a lower rate of random encounters, oh yeah and there is a run button now which really speeds up the game every RPG should have a run button imo. And being portable is just the icing on the cake.

The GBA ports do to the SNES BOF games what the GBC ports of Dragon Quest 1,2,3 did for the NES originals, its just a much more enjoyable experience for modern gamers.

Hahahaha, oh no. Not at all.

A good review overall, but you were right about the magnified problems. I've never beaten BOFII due to the frustrating encounter rate. It wears on you after a while. I really ought to go back sometime soon...

Read my post above, it seems like the GBA port is just what you need ;)

I would, but I have a SNES save about halfway through. It probably wouldn't be worth it to track down the GBA port at this point.

I didn't give BoF a fair shake, but I ignored #2 due to playing #1 I found a few years ago and the bad translation, lack of good direction, shitty drop values from fights, and most of all seemingly getting jumped every couple tiles you walked I couldn't stand it more than a couple of hours.

If the GBA versions really clean up the abuses of repeated fights every couple steps with crappy gains I might just have to look into them. I try usually to get games for the intended systems, but on occasion the GBA version I prefer over the SNES (like Blackthorne) so I will get those.

I just popped in here wanting to see what kind of SNES stuff got reviewed because I'd like to try a few more obscure/odd things like Dragon View or Arcana maybe that usually don't make the hit lists of things to do that actually are good.

I'd say he's done a decent job of spreading between big names, group videos of genres/music/imports, non-SNES games, and the more obscure.

I'd suggest if you're interested in stuff that is more on the obscure side to check out his videos on Robotrek, Super Ninja Boy, Troddlers, Cybernator, Sparkster, True Lies, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition, Shadowrun, Out of This World, Run Saber, Skyblazer, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, Knights of the Round, and Ninja Warriors. Some of these have gotten to be bigger names in recent years, but none have the name value of something like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, or Super Mario Kart.

Are you referring to 7th Saga or something in the DQ series? I always thought the difficulty in 7th Saga was a little overstated

Yeah, but I still find it tougher than Breath of Fire II.

That said, this is also the console that had Wizardry I, II, III, V, and VI come out on it. We're lucky it never saw Wizardry IV.

Ah, haven't played those, I tend to stay away from SNES PC ports
