That would be pretty nice, but I feel like, outside of small indie games, couch co-op is dead except on the Wii-U. It is a shame, as that is one of the biggest factors in my purchases. I guess the consumer puts too much weight on frame rate over fun, because honestly, on-line co-op is just not the same as local.dunpeal2064 wrote:Xenoblade is also a non-mmo wow, essentially. huge world, MMO combat (Your main character is a rogue, the goofy dude is a warrior tank, etc), and LOTS of quests.
I wish there was a game that demanded the skill and teamwork of wow, though, while still using a similar dps/tank/heal setup, but not being online. Something like PSO or Diablo, but where I actually have to care about what I do, and with roles and such. If this existed in couch co-op form I would be in heaven.

Probably more that things are designed to be convenient for older age groups. It's a lot easier to pencil in time to be online than work out when people can all get together at someone's house.BogusMeatFactory wrote: That would be pretty nice, but I feel like, outside of small indie games, couch co-op is dead except on the Wii-U. It's not just Wii U stuff though - Borderlands 2/Pre-sequel have split screen, most Halo games, Gears of War games, and so on.
Though it's not local coop, Guild Wars falls into the Diablo/PSO style game with group strategy.

I don't see how it is easier to say, "Hey guy that lives 5 minutes from me, do you have time to play a game online for an hour," vs. "Hey guy that lives 5 minutes from me, do you have time to play a game in person?"isiolia wrote:Probably more that things are designed to be convenient for older age groups. It is easier to say, "Hey guy who lives states away, do you have time to play on-line," vs in person, sure, but for my situation, it is a lot more convenient (and fun) for people to come over and play.
When talking split screen, you listed a small spattering of games, only one of which is on current gen systems and, from the looks of people's reactions online, the Master Chief Collection has a very very broken split-screen co-op that has lots of crashes and major performance issues.

I'd say there are a whole lot of other in-between situations. 5 minutes is pretty generous - for most, that's not just a local friend that happens to share the same interest, that's pretty much someone who lives in your neighborhood to boot. 15-30 minutes each way could be more realistic.BogusMeatFactory wrote: I don't see how it is easier to say, "Hey guy that lives 5 minutes from me, do you have time to play a game online for an hour," vs. "Hey guy that lives 5 minutes from me, do you have time to play a game in person?"

Nevermind family logistics, like playing once the kids are in bed versus leaving the house once the kids go to bed, etc.
I was listing stuff offhand, there's plenty more. The database here has something like 25 couch co-op games on the XBox One alone.

Re: Share some of your best gaming screen shots
I think this discussion should probably go to a more dedicated thread, but what is shown on Co-Optimus is both games that haven't come out yet and also a large multitude of indie games, which I stated previously is the almost exclusive source of couch co-op on current gen systems.
All I am saying is that the majority of big-box developers are moving away from local co-op to on-line co-op and that it is a shame. I do not see Ubisoft or EA going, "The majority of our consumer base are parents (not entirely true), so let's make the games exclusively on-line co-op to cater to their schedules."
If you want to do the whole, "My dick is bigger than yours," conversation, Co-Optimus shows that the Wii-U has more than double the couch co-op games than the Xbox One at a whopping 58.
I need to stress that it isn't about one system being better than another, I was merely stating that local co-op is featured in almost every single title published on the Wii-U, which was a factor for my purchase. I wish there was more local co-op options in every system, but it isn't the case. I want more local co-op regardless of where it is coming from. I think some people benefit more from it than others and it is a market that is forgotten.

Playing through HL2 again. Here are some shots early in the game in glorious 2560x1440 on highest settings. Holds up pretty well for being 10 years old.

Older. Not wiser.

Re: Share some of your best gaming screen shots
You can actually make it look even better, without mods.
Source engine supports a lot of commands for screenshot taking and if you have the horsepower to run it at interactive rates when having these things cranked, it'll look pretty amazing.
You can start looking here if interested: https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Ultra_high_settings
To note, all graphics commands in Source Engine require cheats enabled. So, I would imagine achievements will be disabled if you use them.

I've never looked into mods, but anytime I fire up HL2 I'm amazed how good it still looks.

Yeah, vanilla Half Life 2 still manages to look pretty impressive.
