I am in love with Axelay

Post by Anayo »

A few months ago someone posted a single screenshot on the r/gaming subreddit asking, "Which game does this belong to?"

When someone posted, answering, "It's Axelay," every molecule of my body screamed, "I must have this game." My paypal balance decreased by $25 soon thereafter.

I think this game is perfect. The music, the graphics, the balls to the wall difficulty, the bosses at the end of each stage… Man I miss the days games were like this. Don't get me wrong, I love today's XBOX and Playstation as much as the next guy, but as they say, sometimes "less is more". There's just something magical about being thrust into the pixelated cockpit of earth's last space fighter to save the world one stage at a time.

Axelay is rad indeed. Took me a while to get used to the vertical stages, and while I still can't rate them as high as other verts of the time, they have grown on me.

Some cool shit in this game that I don't see often in shmups, like the spider boss using its webbing to slow your ship, or the boss that hits you with an attack that switches your weapons.

Definitely one of the better snes shmups.

Which do you prefer? If Axelay's mediocre to you I must really be missing out.

I got it a couple of years ago. I like certain aspects of it, but it hasn't completely "clicked" with me yet. I find the vertical stages pretty disorienting too.

It does seem like a grower though, and I would like to sink some more time into it when I have a chance. My Retron 5 seems to hate shmups though, so I need to drag my old SNES out of storage.
