If you love shmups, try to bend your emulation rules just a little bit. Either that or have reeeealy deep pockets and start buying arcade boards.

Always am sad to see a shmup fan never play Batrider, Bakraid, Esp Ra De, Feveron, the good NMK/UPL games, etc. I'd never have played Ibara Kuro, ever, without emulation. Board is like $1200+ last I checked, probably higher now. Damn fun game though.

Just my thoughts, either way always glad to see another shmupper on the boards :D

And yeah, Sapphire rules. Still can't believe its a Turbographx game.

I feel the same, it's not as satisfying for some weird reason.

Exactly, I don't feel the same attachment to the game when on emualtors, It's easier for me to just brush it off, but if I own it, I'm more compelled to play it more seriously I guess.

But I maybe should give emulation another go, considering all the games you guys just mentioned. For now, I'm gonna be busy enough just trying to get good at the ones I own. I've never beeb able to 1CC a game yet. I want that to change lol.

PS: Thanks dunpeal, it's nice to be apart of a shmup community

Just started play Raiden Trad on the Super Nintendo...as a side note after playing Deathsmile, Castle of shikigami, and Akai Katana, you get used to the fluidity of the game. While I was playing Trad I noticed lag and frame rate drop a lot more than I did last time I played it(I know there is a power difference between the SNES and Xbox 360, I'm not comparing them in that manner). The slow down almost gives the player an edge over the enemies, either way the game is tons of fun

I'm pretty new to shmups. I could probably count on one hand the ones I'd played up until the past year, not counting random quarters in arcade machines. Here is what I'm playing now. I kinda just play them in small doses but I need to settle on one and try to make some progress:

Gradius, NES: I really like this game but I can't figure out how to get past the volcano in stage 1! The screen stops scrolling and it seems like there's nowhere to go! I'll figure it out

Robo Aleste, Sega CD: Really like this one too, though to be honest I have a hard time seeing bullets I have to dodge. The grenades I throw in an arc pattern kinda make everything hard to see.

Sol-Feace, Sega CD: I think I might like this one better than Robo Aleste despite it being much cheaper to acquire. I like the music a little better too. The one I go to most out of the ones listed.

Hellfire, Genesis: Really like the music, multi-directional shooting, and power up system in this one, but it's another one where if you die you start in the middle of everything with a bare bones ship. It really makes it hard to not get frustrated.

Playing Ibara. I like the game, I want to love it, but my progress is so slow.

With the volcanoes in Gradius, you just have to shoot the rocks & dodge. Try to get some options; they'll help.

Position your options in a vertical line directly below you and hang out in the very top left corner continuously rapid firing, you don't need to move at all. Works in arcade and NES versions.

I usually try to place them in a semi-circle above and around me. Everyone has different means of success.
